Mark's 1.0LX

DSCF0406.jpg

That sits luvly! Great work Mark, im confident you'll make it work :D

are they the 8j -10 offset ones from futher up the thread tho mark?

Yeah they are the same ones - I probably made a mistake with the offset up there. They are stamped 0.5 out (or 13mm ish). Though I'm sure when I actually measured them they were slightly different. Its not enough to make a huge difference to how the wheel would sit relative to the arch. The axle isn't dead centre either, its evened up with a spacer one side but that is still the side with the biggest gap.

I'm not conviced that they would suit it, on a solid colour they would work, with more motorspot type influences in the styling. I'm stuck with this mettalic, that is rather nice but not a race car colour or finish and will be blooming hard to match/fade in if I wreck the arches.

I went back to black centres after my play with gold, the eights are both painted and I'm going to try and get the sevens done this week so that I can get some tyres on them and hopefully start running them on the rear for the time being.

mark mate that looks awesome!!make it fit!heat the paint roller it properly and gentley it will be fine,

worst case with the paint is your have to buy a $4.28 can of officail nissan one coat spray paint

ultralite do a roller for 190, buy it and sell it or ask on retro rides, some one will rent you out one for cheap

falling that, heat gun hammer and scaffold bar,it worked for me without damage mate :) but whatever you do, you have to keep them on!

Here I am!

I had a little play with the car today. I made a subtle change.

Before,

After,

DSCF1099.jpg

I took another coil off the front - thats 3.5 off the front and just over half of of the rear - so I suppose they are at about 2.75 off.

I also wired both ends of the front springs into the cups because I was never happy with just the tops wired. I also made up some droop straps for the rear, so now that end stays nicely located when jacked up as well.

With the car's weight on the suspension:

DSCF1097.jpg

Its close to the exhaust on the off side, but i've now tied it out of the way with a cable tie, if the suspension was unloaded the cable tie would break and support the axle like so:

On the inside:

DSCF1096.jpg

The straps are fixed through the boot floor, not ideal, but the fixing point is very close to the chassis rail each side in thhe corner formed by a cross member so its nice and strong, with the big washers spreading the load nicely.

While working I wondered if side pipes and a brake light on the axle is the way I should be going with this?

Cheers guys.

Its got a bit of intentional rake in that pic, so that it sits about level with a full tank of fuel and some stuff in the back. If I find that it doesn't generally sit about right I shall just have to have another half coil off the back to even it out.

I wish I could afford coilovers. Getting it sat right would be so much easier!

tell me about it mate, should have bought damn corsas or polos, 150 quid and bobs your uncle!! still fair play mate, maybe an idea for front matiz legs to keep the dampening better at a later date?

Yeah thats definately a plan for the future, along with continuing occasional forays into researching possible alternatives from other makes and plotting and schemeing home brewed solutions that I won't get time to make and can't afford the parts for anyway.

Anyhow, you can't put a price on originality. How many low polo's do ya see for each modded micra?

thats a good point, hence the lack of micras sitting pretty

i saw a matt black micra the other day (toneys i think) and almost broke my neck looking out the car window

literally turned into a little kid when i saw it, like a rare breed of bird or something

all i think now when a low polo, corsa, golf goes past is "want your coilovers, want your coilovers" god im sad ha ha:eek:

any idea of ride height marky mark, floor to arch etc etc on front, cheers

I'll have a measure tomorrow.

i still owe you one too :wasntme:

keep damn forgetting, will get it i promise, i need to know someone with a polo on coilies, also a golf and maybe a corsa

i could one buy one try there stuff them spend 150 quid(which i dont have!) and by them, cant afford to buy them just for trial purposes :(

still need to find out from micras69 how low the car was on the highest setting on the coilovers

i think his lowness isnt our chassis scrapping goodness if you see what i mean?

I got another couple of hours this morning. After a bit of measuring I set to work on an adjustable panhard rod.

Ride height - Not that low. I'm still not really bothering the speed bumps into school. Must try Harder.

Panhard rod bits, some pipe, fishmouthed on one end, the large bush eye from a stock panhard rod, an M12 rose joint, M12 threaded insert and an M12 half nut (well full nut actually, turned down to a half nut).

It's just recieved a coat of hammerite, unfortunately I've run out of tinker time today so I'll have to wait to have a go at fitting after I've pressed the bush back in at somepoint, probably next week. I'll probably need to turn up some tapered washers to fit the rod end into the space previously occupied by the bush on the body end.

Then its some more machining to make some spigot rings and eccentric sleeves for the studs so that I can get the 7" wide slots on the back, and probably a ghetto arch rolling as well.

I decided on a mid adjustment length of around 815mm for the panhard rod. The stock rod is 820mm. I had 10mm difference between the wheel placement in the arch left to right, so half that should have the wheels in the centre, with adjustment each way for fine tuning.

you not planning on making a business out of this mark?
Looking awesome! (Y)

It would be lovely to spend my working days in a well set up unit tinkering with bits of older cars. But alas I suspect it would be less likely to pay the mortgage.

technique used:glare:? i was thinking more along the lines of what drop the springs are. is there other things you have done like?

I've no idea actually, they are bespoke springs and I've not got round to measuring a full height stocker yet to find out what my drop is. Everything thats been done to the car is in this blog.

yeh, looking good mark (Y)
(you,ve got less clearance under that subframe than me now )

Really? I thought your wheel arch gap at the front looked less - are the current 14"s a little taller?

Nice work Mark, got me thinking I should make one myself really.

Have you not got an adjustable already - has you panhard rod gone past horizontal and started pulling the axle back in line or is it at its longest - about 15mm wheel to arch difference between the NS and OS?

Lolz, maybe you have a smaller tape measure. The one I used was pretty large. I'll have to use something with a more easily replicated size (or prehaps get an actual measurement :) ).

No. I havent got one yet but I do need one. My rod is at its longest atm. Looks absolutely horizontal to me. I just dont wanna spend 100 odd quid for a technically "steel pipe".
What would happen if one of the welds snaps?

Just some more pics to illustrate that the only modifications I've made since the last set was washing the dirt off.

Current plans involve something like this happening,

Is it bad that i want to copy pretty much everything you do to your car? (don't worry, i wont!) Love it and love the splitter idea, proper retro. Also, are those new reg plates i spy?

Is it bad? I dont know. I would be nothing but flattered if you did.

Yeah there's a new plate on the front, I got a pair of plates made up at the Retro Show at Santa Pod the other weekend. A standard plate for the front and an import size rear, for fitting between march nipples. I'm not overly impressed with the quality the front is OK so that went on to neaten the front up. I wish I had asked for standard black letters not the 3D and I should have got them done in original charls wright not the new font. All in a bit of a waste of £20 because I have decided that I'm probably never going to get round to fitting the March nipples as I dont want to have to do the paintwork involved.
I think I'll get some pressed alloy plates at some point.

are they standard springs your cutting? i bet it nearly breaks your spine whilst driving, mine did lmao

Yeah, the ride is pretty firm. Its not the stiffness of the springs that cause the less than pleasent ride though, but the lack of damping from the standard shocks.

I am willing to suffer a little for my art :)

I like your splitter idea, I'm thinking of doing something very similar, but I have to take my dremel to the scrapyard to pull it off. You car is coming along very nicely can't beat custom jobs feel a lot better about your car when you've made it yourself because you know it's a one off.

Q. Is that illegal on uk roads :p
And about the march nipples it shouldn't be that much work talk to mckenziecz :D

Nice Bosozoku. Did you paint it red because of cops? Id love to go to the gathering but its just a bit far. And post 1990 cant go on proper stand or something like that :(

Cheers. It's painted (orange - just because I like it) because I didn't have any stainless tube to polish nice and shiney (and being inherently a pit lazy it was easier). I've also noticed that a lot of the actual boso cars have painted exhausts. Post '90 is ok if you were booked on a stand or with a club. A bit far? the furthest travelled award went to a chap from Finland who had driven over in a Citroen GS!

A few of pics of mine from today,

Cheers gents.

There's no such thing as not ready to show, and I dont know anyone who has a finished car.
The fullest extreams of Bosozoku are not for this ride, and with at least four other cars sporting Boso inspired pipes it seems thats a bit old hat now too.

A great selection of 'Gathering pics here.

amazing bunch of pics
and someones having a good sleep after to,they brung theyr cabbin:laugh:
top cars,i was taken back to the future for sure!
got to say i have owned the mk1celica, mk1 3series bmw 318(badged as 316 but factory1.8 engine,datsun 120y the long blue one in the pic,mk4 cortina,toyota cressida,k10 facelift , and 2-3 capris my fren owns 1 a rs 3100 and a 30e all tax exemt(capris)
thanks for the pics good work

Good luck with the fitting 'tweaker. The main reason I haven't got round to fitting mine yet is because I expect removing the old one to be a complete pita.

Thats a cool selection of past rides R-Reg.
