Skinners Sprint Micra

i,m just "picking it up as i go" too mate :D i,ve just changed the camera frame-rate to 30fps (from 15) and i,ll try later

aye, plainly put eh paul
you will be able to apply more engine load than me tho (from your live data) my engine load is gonna be quite small by just revving it in neutral (which is compounded by the light flywheel too eh)

The more straight forward the better!

Il find the steepest hill i can to run it up, a hard pull through the rev's in third should be enough?

Im going to take a gamble & see if i have this straight!

As i increase RPM the ecu will advance the ignition as the engine is spinning more quickly.

However when an engine is under load this advance needs to be decreased depending on the size of the force against the motor.

My problem is as i have no "load" going into the ECU so the ignition will be far too advanced when going uphill / WOT

What i need to do is record the RPM / Advance under different loads & compare them to a regular map to see how far out from "ideal" i am.

then i might be able to come to a compromise at WOT (what i need when racing) to get the most for the time being :)

thats what the dyno guy,s tend to do when roadtesting eh paul :)
the rpm advance is most beneficial for mpg and emissions it seems, and is a hindrance in the quest for maximum power (ie, you need far less rpm advance at high load/WOT)
which flies in the face of opinions that "gains are low when you are running WOT all the time" ^;)

I'll be interested in your results. See how they'll compare to mine :)
Wont a 2D map be ok providing you can set the map knowing your load values. Or is something that has be varied under load? In terms of WOT use.
And vac can deal with the low load/rpm advance?

aye, a bob-weight and vacuum operated dizzy is crude 3D i guess andy

here,s a vid of the car jacked up 1 side and running in 3rd gear paul (to simulate some load) you can see it holds roughly base timing when loaded (20 deg paint line) but the line drifts to the left when slowly revved (45ish deg of advance)

and this one with the T/P/S disconnected, where its fully advanced under load eh :)

That's spot on Frank so with no load feed from the TPS it goes to fully advanced straight away, mine will be doing the same ( will test it though)

Is there much I can do to get the advance to about 20 under load to get a bit more bhp? Or is that only doable with nistune?

Well the TPS is ready to be mounted up, brackets made just waiting on some metal adhesive to join the peg I'm using to turn the TPS to the carbs.

Once it's in and working il get the datascan plugged in to see what's what. Hopefully emulating Franks readings under load ie less advance under loaded WOT :)

Little bit of progress made, TPS sensor cam (or whatever you want to call it) is attached & turns spot on with the butterfly spindle :)

Next up to mount the sensor (ditched the first bracket too flimsy) will need to be adjustable to its reads WOT at the right point. Might compromise the idle as it will read that the throttles a little more open than it is (shouldnt have thought this would cause any problems)

P.S its not stuck on with sticky tape that just to keep the excess epoxy out ;)

Unpicked the wiring tonight (again grrr) routed the TPS loom to where it needs to be :)

Plan for the weekend, get the laptop out and reset the timing to 15deg at 650rpm, then plug the TPS in and give it it's first test run :)

Idles reset to 15deg at 650rpm (drops to 600 with the TPS unplugged)

TPS reading at just over 4 kilo ohms at WOT which I think Haynes is telling is about right

Driving its pulling smooth but I won't be able to stretch it until some closed road event,

Luckily that's this coming Saturday more drag racing!

Don't suppose you have ever run a transponder? Black thing on the cars front?

If so where was it mounted/what was it's size?

I haven't mate tbh, if they are anything like kart transponders (imagine they would be) they yet are only small, 1" x 3".

All my events are run by bean timing so it's just beam splitters up front for me :)

Sorry mate I think that's what I meant... The black rod things, timing struts i thinks the other name is?
I was caught out for mine being too high, so I'll just make a new one, No worries :)

That's them mate timing strut/ beam splitter, that's a pain u got caught up on it

Think the minimum height is 18cm but no higher than 20cm, made mine 19 to be on the safe side.

Since I never got around to tidying the wheels up since they went on thought it best to get stuck in with the drag and drift coming up.

Tar and break dust must have been on a good while, white spirit and 4 hours of scrubbing!

Few coats of polish on each will hopefully make washing them in future the future dam easier

I did mate. You stuck some vids up didn't you? It looks like a decent event :)... I'll keep watching em see if I can learn the route
