Skinners Sprint Micra

I must give these sprints/hillclimbs a go.
Are the msa regs much different from stage rally?

It depends which class you run in mate, if your in the road going class like me the minimum i think is beam splitter, extinguisher, suit, gloves, helmet & boots.. When you get into sports libre & the others they are basically the same as stage rallying.. there's more rules on aerodynamics by that point though.

Thanks for that. I'd probably go sports with having the stage car already made.
Think I'll have to drag out the blue book of dullness.. happy days. Always entertaining trying to understand it
Any regs you know restricting engine modifications, power etc?
Hopefully I'm not too far out with what I've aero wise standard wing with just a splitter and 'gills' (anything flash gets annihilated on stage :D)
Sorry for all the questions but your video has inspired me to try it :)

Bit of light reading for you mate: http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/..._Sprints,_Hill_Climbs_and_Drag_Racing_(S).pdf

Power is free from what i know (have a 850bhp Quatto & a 650bhp running the same event as me) but forced induction cars have there cc class increased by x1.7

I think the main thing with the aero is that rear spoiler cannot be higher than the roof line things like that. I know what you mean most splitters etc seem to be hanging off, see quite a bit marshaling!

Im sure you would find a class to fit into with whatever mods you have :)

No problem with questions mate ask away!

Ah yea same rules apply on stage with the boost. Except we are power restricted :(
Is there no supermodified class like the rally cross then? Ie impreza engined micra?
Thanks for the link. Saves me finding the pages in the blue bible

So I take it you scrap the dash and passenger seat from your vid?
I'm used to having to keep the form of the standard car like similar shaped dash installed and of course 2 seats.

Long gone are the group B days eh! was that the reason the Andy Burtons cosworth pug was outlawed as well i guess?

there would definitely be a class for your scooby engine micra mate as i've been up against an evo engined mini, bike engined all sorts & even a V8 bike engined stratos! (two bike engines merged togeather!)

Yeh theres me, two extinguishers my home brew dash & a cage not alot else :)

Always fancied rallying, passed me BARS just haven't got the funds unfortunately, looking forward to seeing the subamicra come togeather!

It is a shame especially when you think group B was banned because of poor crowd control at the time. After a few accidents that was that :( then again the delta s4 was dangerous fuel tank under the seat.
Yea I believe his was outlawed due to power and chassis construction... dont quote me though

Seems fairly simple to construct a car. Depends how far your wanting to go I guess. No disrespect to you or anything with saying its easy.
Ive read what you've sent me :) might start off at the beginning in the production class

Rallyings brilliant. Scares the life out of you sometimes. Those trees tend to get closer than you think at the time.
Its not as expensive as you think.
Quick list:
Rollcage
2 seats
2 harnesses
Plumbed in and handheld extinguishers
All your clothing and helmet.
Its not an exhaustive list but thats pretty much it. I got my stage car built for about £1000

None taken mate, its the time / money that's the kicker tuning a Micra N/A isnt cheap

In all honesty all i need to logbook my car is a FIA kill switch & to mod the front cage legs its the 3-4k for the seasons rallying i carnt afford, tyres/ fuel/ entires etc

Its nearly all tarmac ralliying on the Isle of Man & the roads ruin cars so im bond to bend something as well, (its a bit too shiny to be throwing down the lanes just yet :) )

Ah yea I don't think of those bits. It is like £200 ish for an entry. Then tires and fuel etc like you say. Tried night rallies? Loadssss cheaper. Just like stage really except they're navigation based

Totally agree. A boosted car is always easier to setup for more power.
Yea its fairly easy to get one built dont forget you'll need your dash back.
Dont have to do a season maybe just one event?
The kill switch is fairly easy to install too. People make it harder that it is :)

I've been talking to a mate about a real cheap night rally car, quite a few of them over here. Most stage rallies over here entry is £450+ which at 5 a year i carnt do im afraid.

Like you say one a year maybe in the future, im just trying to get it as quick as i can for now.. more GRP panels needed!

Night rally cars are the simplest form of competition car :) warning triangle, spill kit & ok/sos board. All thats required assuming you already have an msa licence non race b minimum.
Some more info here
night rally info

Wow there not cheap. Some event do escalate to those costs round here but I dont do those. I do about 3/4 a year :)

I think I remember reading you cant replace the glass? Its a shame really, you can lose alot of weight from polycarb windows and removing all the winders etc

Sorry i missed your post mate, i did my BAR's exam a few years back so im keen to get involved at some point :) thanks for the link

Told you yours will be ready long before mine, I've not even taken the head off yet

Not sure about that yet mate, wont be going in the car until after 31/08. (bit of local drag racing & dont want to risk the fresh motor on that )

Il try to get it assembled & ready to go as best i can though

You can replace the glass, it isn't going to make the difference between win and lose on a road rally though ;-)

That was regarding the hillclimb and sprints. Not worth the money for a night rally car. I use my xsara picasso for those ;) its a sturdy car.

Though have you weighed glass replacement? 30-40kg depending on car. Its a fair bit of weight :)

Skinner.... I've began my hillclimb car with that polo of mine... trying to maintain some practicality. I.e keep seats and remove before events.
Going for the production class :)

That's fine by me :) I've got my blue bible for light bedtime reading
As long as I can modify my suspension so i can get my corner weights in :)

Been meaning to ask you today. Do you run a certainly front rear weight balance and height? I'm assuming front a tad lower than rear to keep the majority of the weight planted while climbing?

seeing as this car seems to be on 3 wheels more than 4 in most of your pics i think you should be called the msc stig :p driving how it should be done lol

Couldn't give a definite answer on the suspension mate u know u can run different tyres etc. uphillracers is a good site if you fancy a bit if hillclimbing mate, worth a look at least

I,vw never corner weighted the car tbh but it's on 55mm Tarmac spec springs and with naff all weight in the back it does have a slight rake to the front maybe half an inch, with the state of the roads here I didn't go too into changes geometry as you'll never get it right every time :)

Lol u flatter me mate, I've seen some of the rally footage of the guys in here they get the commitment award for sure :)

That's true you can never have a perfect setup. Used to setting the stage car up for the majority of the stage. For example 70% mud 30% tarmac. They're 2 opposites but you can only do the best with what you got.
Maybe I'm jumping too far into it already :p but your seems to handle really well so I thought I'd ask ;)
Thanks for the site I'll check it out :)

Just home for a quick look at what's arrived, will get everything sorted tomorrow hopefully

Mmm tasty clean block. btw how is the front crankcase breather pipe removed off the block? is it like tolerance fitted like the dipstick tube?

Mine was only 65
I'm sure it will be worth every penny
Oh by the way ive my first hill climb/ sprint in august I'll let you know how it goes ;)
