Ralph needed this pin making in titanium

drawing.jpg

so ordered some 5mm titanium rod

IMAG5880.jpg

machined down to 70mm

IMAG5881.jpg

cut the straight groove with a parting tool to create a flat face for the nut to screw all the way in

IMAG5882.jpg

machined the ends down to 3.9mm for tapping an M4

IMAG5883.jpg

chamfered

IMAG5884.jpg

3 of the rods were tapped ok but the 4th one snapped, argh

IMAG5885.jpg

think my 10yr old tap die set is getting worn so splashed out for another

IMAG5909.jpg

ordered another titanium rod and made the 4th pin

IMAG5910.jpg

to dill the 2mm ring hole, I used the rigid lathe rather than do it manually on the pillar drill but it was still very tricky to keep the thin drill running centered

IMAG5911.jpg
IMAG5912.jpg

rounded off with a file

IMAG5913.jpg

one of the difficult pin hole was slightly off-center but useable

IMAG5915.jpg

A proper set of taps and dies ( pretty expensive though) will make a world of difference, those kits are more for repairing threads than cutting new.

To drill cross holes centrally in rod, the correct way is to put the rod in a V block , then drill with a pillar drill , you get the holes in the correct place every time.
See HERE for more details

agree. oddly the new clarke die can barely begin a cut and just rounds off, whereas my old halfords die cuts it fine o_O
I mainly use these to clear rust off all the old fasteners and 10yrs has taken its toll

a small update while I'm processing footage.
my bday trackday at teesside autodrome with the new tweaks was fantastic. she's so quick down the straights with reduced weight and brakes bite ok, slight high speed understeer.
definately turned afew heads, made afew new friends, but unfortunately near the end run the gearbox went kaplunk! clattatttatatttaatat down the fast straights
some part of the input shaft or clutch disc has destroyed itself making a horrid noise.

in the end before the place shuts, I decided to brave it a drive an injured kasandra all the way back home with a m8 following behind with tow rope and I can't describe how painful it was to listen to her cogs being obliterated so loudly I can hear the echo's across the street :(

more details soon but safe to say this gearbox is ruined (prey to god the LSD is fine)

Teesside Autodrome - Evening Trackday 10-04-2017

Planned to goto teesside autodrome for an evening trackday on my bday to shakedown & test the cars settings with the recent new mods ready for the silverstone track run at Japfest on 30th april.
it was suppose to be my day off work but my collegue hurt his back so I had to come in during the day to cover for him, so drive kasandra in her trackday form over to work.

IMAG5916.jpg

Arrived at 4pm, it started off very quiet, there was only afew ppl there. me getting the few odd looks from ppl prob cos of the wheels or that it's a micra, decided to just proceed as normal and goto signing-in.
on the way back to the car, few ppl were curious bout the car and I met Frankie in his blue facelift, Neil & Noel in his elise & Martin in his mx5 arrived before we went to briefing.
after briefing it was all a rush as ppl were getting ready for the warm up and I had to quickly unpack, setup all the cameras, setup the dampers, helmet up and rush behind the queue. I really should've done all this before briefing.

IMAG5917.jpg

17:00 Sighting Warmup Lap
Went out for a 3 laps to warm up the tyres & brakes

back at the pits I checked the tyre pressures and they're still at the cold 1.85/2.5bar front/rear so need afew more laps to heat the brakes and tyres up.

Remark:
-understeer during long fast corner and up the tight steep chicane hills.
-brake pedal bite point is still firm & slightly above throttle while system is cold.
-the locked seat beat works great at keeping me anchored to the seat during braking & cornering.
-notice I only reach fast laps when the brake discs are red hot at their optimum temp

The first run certainly attracted some attention :p
After parking up on a level floor to let brakes cool and check oil level, Kevin Ellis who has a grey pickup K11 popped over and we had a good chat, real nice bloke.

Later on he asked if his daughter Chloe (quite nice looking ) could have a ride? I was surprisingly shocked by this cos I've never had such a request before, especially with a nice lady, but I was more than happy to give anyone a ride. Said are you sure Chloe? yup.
The track stopped hiring helmets so they went off to register as passenger and to borrow a helmet from someone.

More young lads and their gf arrived to check out kasandra and asking bout it.

Remark:
-understeer during long fast corner and up the tight steep chicane hills.
-brake pedal bite point has dropped flush with the throttle once system is hot.
-slightly less body roll with Chloe counter-balancing my weight.

She is one brave lady, especially cos it's her first time on such a track in a very fast car. Even being thrown around the seat by g-force and heavy braking, she was perfectly calm & quiet and got a buzz off it :D

We exchanged facebook & mobile numbers and kept in touch :)

Remark:
-the stiffer lighter X-braced chassis and old soft spring-rate and bad front roll-center geometry make the car feel very rolly-polly.
-almost rolled over after hitting the high inside kerb but some fast reaction sorted it out.
-oversteer when thrown into a fast bend
-understeer during long corners
-pumped up the rear tyres to 2.7bar to try reduce understeer.

On the last run while accelerating down the straight in 3rd, when I reached peak torque about 5k rpm it made a horrible crunch noise and snapped out of gear
Went into 5th to continue drive around the corner, tried selecting 3rd but was crunching badly. selected a barely working 2nd to try make it back to the pits.
Ohh **** this ain't good, especially with japfest coming up I really didn't need this to happen

It's such a horrible noise nursing her back, me and other spectators were like this:

bale.jpg

The noise stops spinning when I disengage the clutch and most of the gears still work so it ain't the final drive or clutch or engine.
Me, Neil, Martin, an organisor and frankie all tried to figure out what could be broken. Was thinking maybe the clutch disc springs has come out or the input shaft bearings collapsed or the 3rd gear cog selection teeth has shattered?

Tried to remove the starter to see if the clutch assembly is still intact but it was getting close to shutting the gates so decided to reassemble.

IMAG5918.jpg

Without breakdown cover and a very broken gearbox, I had to decide whether to nurse her home (guys went Noo no no) or keep her parked overnight to collect tomorrow? (I'd still be in same situation and don't fancy leaving her out alone).
So I decided to risk nursing her home in her barely drivable state with Martin following behind with a tow strap.
Jesus christ!! this was the single most mechanically painful drive home as I try to maintain speed on the back roads while she obliterates the cogs. It's so loud, I could hear it echo off the street.
When stationary, it goes quiet when I disengage the clutch.
At speed, it only goes quiet when coasting in neutral and clutch engaged (input shaft made to spin slowly with the idling engine). If a disengage clutch at speed, the noise speeds up cos the diff & layshaft is spinning up the input shaft due to the viscous oil.

Made it back home, thanking Martin and back to bed, dreading what I'll find the next day.

next morning I drained the oil

Oooooooh that's alot of metal pieces there from the destroyed cogs

Opened it up and oh gawd , yup the teeth on 3rd gear has had enough

IMAG5935.jpg
IMAG5938.jpg
IMAG5940.jpg

I suppose after 5-6yrs of being driven daily and abused by 150ftlb torque on many trackdays and rapid upshifts, one of the 3rd gear teeth broke when the engine reached 150ftlb, sending the rest of em into a kamikaze stripping the whole cog and half the layshaft cog too.
Time for a new gearbox

comparing the old broken shafts with the new one

IMAG5990.jpg

input shafts are the same

IMAG5991.jpg

the layshaft are mostly the same except for 2nd gear

IMAG5992.jpg

the old gearbox has a full set of synchromesh teeths and symmetrically pointy engagement teeths on the cog

IMAG5994.jpg

on this spare 75k gearbox, it has a partial synchromesh teeth (same one used throughout the other gears), and the engagement teeth are very oddly shaped to one side. never seen that feature before.

assessing the tyres & brakes after the trackday at Teesside.
fronts are wearing evenly down to 5mm and the rears are down to 3mm with loads of shoulder wear. usable for Silverstone but may need to replace the rears afterwards.

IMAG6024.jpg

she's finally running again and all working nice n sharp now. just afew of the usual annoying rattles & creaking to sort out

IMAG6028.jpg

tightened up the clutch pedal nuts bolts and went for a test drive. pedal end still has a slight creaking when I release the pedal rapidly.

@2:00 the idle was stuck fully open and really rich for some reason. pulled over to check for vac leaks or faulty MAF connection. idle dropped back down after I jiggled the brake servo vac hose and the MAF cable. runs normal now but need to check for anything loose.

I don't usually post personal stuff on here but the past struggle involving women has jinxed me again.

during my trackday fun at teesside I met Chloe who was brave enough to ride with me on track, that got my attention and was as though it was a dream come true, meeting a potential gf out on track while doing the stuff I luv. she's ok looking with glasses and no makeup but in other pics without glasses & slight pampering she's quite nice (the power of makeup)

we exchanged details, got to know her more, shared honest remarks, she like cars, learning to fix stuff herself, is a chef, we both suffer from anxiety with a rough past.
as expected with any first relations our online chat started off long and close & open. I expressed affection for her, she liked me too and couldn't wait to have a ride in car bla bla bla.
I guess I got too close, too affectionate, too concerned, too much of everything.

one time she suddenly fell ill and went to bed, I remarked if only I was there to nurse and cuddle her, she replied it would be perfect, it was 2am in morning :/
next morning I messaged her but nothing nothing, got paniced tried ringing and then she txted back that she's still ill and gonna sleep it off. i was that close to thinking of driving over to her place incase she was in trouble.

we arranged a morning meetup before she worked at 4, I met the nice dad (micra nut too) and mom. got along fine and took chloe for an awquid walk down the footpath nearby.
went to first pub but was shut so drove to my local pub for lunch. had a nice talk, doing the gentleman-like stuff, complimented her eyes, tatoos, our habits, matching body language, she was quite shy/nervous/reserved (abit like my first gf Lisa), I slowly worked to hold her nervous hands and felt nice as we giggled from looking at each other.

she was concious of time looking at phone so we got back home for her to get ready for work.
we hugged, I counted 5sec to release but she held on into a long cuddle :) I kissed the cheek and then french kissed her without thinking.

fair to say I was shaking on the way home and effing kicking myself bout why I did that?

anyway afew days of messages later on I noticed her replies are getting shorter and less frequent (only 1 morning & 1 before bed). this lack of contact obviously challenges my anxiety & patience.
and then we were planning to goto whitby on Sat but at last minute she said work asked her for a 9am-10pm. eventually she stopped replying.
I think all the affection, touching, kissin, constant chat has freaked her & parents out and done exactly the same silent treatment as every single women I met.

I'm surprisingly calm about this tday but still doesn't sooth the disheartening feeling that I've fecked up again. I drove to her place whilst they were out and left her gift on the door step as a last goodwill gesture, went back to town and decided to have a big fat greasy breakfast to fill the spot :p

ok lets move onwards ppl towards Japfest

thx Mrthc.
I've gone through alot of false fake love. why don't women just punch us in the face n delicates as a welcome pack before we get involved with em? same outcome

these experiences just makes me hurt, no longer trusting humans, myself or especially women and I'd rather mate with kasandra or a vegetable :p

I understand you Polly.
Maybe she's afraid for something.
Times will be your best friend.
If she fall in love to soon you hear her.
Kasandra will be ed your side surely.

yeah she's prob afraid. or maybe I'm too scary, intimidating, wierd chinese guy? maybe ppl are more into guys who don't give a feck?
well, she's intentionally ignoring me so I'll return the favour and move on. not burning down bridges cos I respect the family but yeah she needs time to think.
I gotta get on with my own life.

We all love the pollyp !!! I hope she doesn't lose out on a upfront honest guy :) (me) only kidding it's all about you mate :)

Lol Zed, luv ya man. Yea it's her loss tbh. I've already lost so much I can't go any lower nor give anymore fcks these days. She's just lost the most loving honest talented guy amongst the herd of circus players out here in the north.

Just remember women don't do logic....

Fry up is a good option though :)

hmm ok, cos the only way I think and do things is via logic. meh I can't change how my brain operates so things either work or not.

a good big fat greasy food is always a good satisfier especially when in stress or hung over :p

ok I have some closure. she replied back tday that she wasn't ready for any serious relationship yet due to personal stuff & anxiety but best we remain friends for now (like my sister said, start off as friends first before serious relationships). she liked the gift I made her.
tis a relief I got answers and didn't burn down bridges. I just needed to have a little..patience (take that song :p )

indeed.
guess I jumped ambitiously too far into the deep end before I learnt to swim (while she's only at the kiddy pool) cos I've been let down by so many women before.
time to start over and work with her together up the same local pool from the shallow end (metaphorically)

the clutch pedal has been making this odd random creaking noise whenever I push/release the pedal quickly and oiling the cable didn't work so removed the pedal to check

IMAG6055.jpg

found that this spring might be rubbing against the case

IMAG6056.jpg

so relocated it to clear the casing and it's worked. smooth and quite clutch pedal

IMAG6057.jpg

My clutch squeaks a bit too. I oiled the cable as you've done and also the arm on top of the gearbox but it hasn't worked. Could my standard pedal be doing it too or is it just because you've modified yours that it rubs

Sent from my SM-G903F using Micra Sports Club mobile app

mine used to squeak/creak whenever it's under a ton of strain from a dry sticking high friction cable till the bulkhead mount snapped off by the heavy clutch. the cable I occasionally take it out and flush & wiggle it thoroughly with wd40 till is comes out the other end and the movement is effortless.

the current pedal creaked cos it's modded and the spring is slightly in wrong location. it's all fixed now.

alignments slightly offset since I changed the gearbox so tday I realigned the wheels in prep for Japfest.

the rear axle was pointing slightly RH so I straightened it.

front wheels still have a 2deg camber and straightened them up with 0.1deg toe-out.
goes much straighter now.

yesterday while exiting a round about, I briefly noticed the airbag light blink for a millisec.
but then tday on the way home, the airbag light stayed on and the horn doesn't work. oh no what now?

IMAG6060.jpg

I thought the horn/airbag uses induction coil coupling but looking at service manuals it uses a coiled up connection. so lets remove the steering with my DIY puller

IMAG6061.jpg

and investigate what's causing the fault

IMAG6062.jpg

remove this retaining clip

IMAG6066.jpg

well there's the problem. after 20yrs of steering, this section of ribbon has fatigued

stuffing the track wheels in the car with the X-brace in the way was abit tricky.
packed & ready for the trip down to wiltshire to visit Abi, fix her car before the show.

View attachment 53753
As a point of safety Paul, make sure that any loose wheels that you share the cabin with are firmly tied down to the cross brace in the car when you are driving. In a fairly innocuous accident, a loose wheel could hit you and badly injure or kill you!

1.jpg

Thurs - Sat I unpacked my tools and we tried to diagnose & fix Abi's broken K12.
It basically runs out of power above 2k and high load but idles & revs in neutral fine.

They had a bluetooth OBD2 dongle so I monitored all the readings while Jonny drove up a hill.
All the sensors read correct except for the throttle % which never goes above 13% even when WOT.

tried cleaning the MAP sensor with no effect, spark plugs clean, O2 clean & working, no vac leaks, tried disabling all electrical loads including alternator & rear lights with no effect.

so maybe the issue could be faulty TPS? removed & dismantled the throttle body

2 (1).jpg

the TPS is sealed in the TB. plugged it in and checked if turning the TPS by hand would alter the reading value, nope so maybe it's faulty?

2 (2).jpg

reassembled

2 (3).jpg

so drove wayy down to this southampton salvage yard which is like car-heaven. so many cars & parts all nicely organised and such a pleasurable environment to be in, like a candy store.
swapped the TB and throttle pedal & MAP sensor & O2 sensor but once again the throttle still never goes above 13% o_O

2 (4).jpg

ok so last resort could be a collapsed block cat? so took all night to remove it, it actually looked intact o_O
2 (5).jpg

but bash out the old fragile cat anyway to eliminate the possible cause.

2 (6).jpg

but once again frustratingly it's still not worked

opened the throttle pedal to check values and it's fine.

3 (1).jpg

we tried literally everything, rang garage & dealers & friends for any help and we reached a point where it's simply not fixable in time and it cannot economically be taken to a garage to fix on a weekend.
so afraid we had to give up and reconsider options.

I swapped over to the track wheels before the show so I don't have to rush around on the day

went over to race control to register & briefing. was gonna add Abi as passenger but she cancelled cos wanna save money for her new car.

ready & waiting in the pit lane, getting the usual butterfly tummy, excitement but just kept calm n focused.
kinda felt outa place amongst the line of fire-breathing extreme skylines, supras, civics, 240z, time attack evos etc.

warm up everything and away we go, most of the cars zooming past as I learn where I can brake & push & sense how she feels.
screaming down the straights, neutral balance with slight understeer round the long corners but very progressive & stable control.

always concious of what could break at any time but she was perfectly fine throughout the journey :)
nice trackside photo
