The 1.3 Turbo Battle####

Well I want something which is approved... Tested. I want something bloody serious. I have sophia in the car I want to make sure she is safe.

no offence to Andy I doubt he has got the experiance that some cage builders have. I want some 50 year old bloke who has been doing it his whole life lol.. every bend calculated and thought over. with welding which would make mother Teresa have faith in the world.

Unfortunately I'm not 50 but I do have cage building ability. That's what having a business based on rally car preparation is all about ;) got certificates and everything :p
No offence taken though chris :) I can see where your coming from

Didnt realise you were qualified mate. I may consider it then.

you got a web site? ta for understanding dude. Its a road going car so I want it to be right up there. Theres more chance of a dangerous crash on the roads when you think about it. Plus when the cars done...Its going to have a lot more power and adds even more risk.

http://www.customcages.co.uk/Rollcage/LoadRollCage.castle?manufacturer=Nissan&model=Micra Upto 02&type=Multipoint

That custom cages does look very comprehensive, i get exactly what you mean about safety Chris, i dont have to run a rollcage in my hillclimb class but i do! (we've all seen the NCAP micra vid's)

A cage is only as good as its mounting points as well, seen a few with the cage feet sticking through the floor after rolls not what you want to happen  Are you going full buckets & harnesses as well? Id recommend weld in seat rails if you do :)

I think the safety devices cage welded in with extra ties added will be the best option paul. I can add to it as i go along and have more cash at hand. Otherwise I will save and save and save while running the car still.. dangerous option whilst running my luck. Yeah the NCAP vids scare me. i think if you drive a micra like you should. 30-50 miles and hour everywhere you can come out a little better but with the turbo reaching a point where i can hit 130 mph in no time its time to re think it. Plus sophia is mad about wanting to track the thing.. she wants to race it more than i do lol.

Yes full buckets and harness. I have some 200 quid ebays which seem rather stable and some sparco 4 points. Happy to run them with all honesty. i am going to use the feet off the micra rails and attach to the bucket rails (which are big ass chunky non-ebay special things by the looks of it) with bolts and then welding to give strength. That way I think the seats aint going anywhere. Plus the original seat must be able to take the brunt of a crash no?

yours in OMP no?

yea they are on the cards. I am at this point trying to make it as safe as possible for time being and add as I go. The roll cage needs to be first, seats, extra cage to be added. and most important.. padding for the roll cage lol.

I'd also recommend expired fia seats and harnesses. Safest option over cheap alternatives :)

Yes, that's exactly what we have, (nothing wrong with the harnesses at all). We've got a Janspeed bolt-in cage, which is very very similar to the safety devices one but with no high level harness bars. Easily modified to include them though.

I run Bride seat rails, they mount into the stock points and are of very solid construction. They also have dual slider mechanisms, not just a single one like some of the cheap knock-offs.

Safety comes high on the list and I personally find the idea of cutting out important parts of the dash or excessive lightening of seats or rails, (airbag or no), for the sake of a few measly kgs to be of no interest what so ever.

may not change the fact that the micra is still a 2star ncap car overall.
although I suppose a micra with roll cage, 4-6point harness, bucket seats and with/without helmet has never been ncap tested so its an unknown.

wonder if ur insurance will be ok with it cos I heard the exposed intrusive cage bars could increase risk of head injury (especially since most ppl don't wear helmets when on public road) so premiums might increase?

short of wrapping whole of sophia in bubblewrap and in a sturdy box and shipped to the destination, the risk of injury will always be there.
and the increase of speed & energy from the turbo further raises that risk.

Yeah would like too, we are getting there.

The car will for a time have very little in which is a shame, I will be very careful driving and no track days i think. I will just add as I go. I think I can get her up and running in the next month or two hopefully mapped. Go from there.

I know I cant make things perfectly safe. but I can limit damage, thats my aim. Sophia does not need to be bubble wrapped, I just couldnt live with myself If i killed her is all.. or she crashed and took herself out. The risk is there, but my responsibility to lower the risk

Mine decreased :)
Though if you have a cage in which can bang your head on whilst seated properly your cage has been built wrong.
Only reason padding is used is for service personnel lumbering about inside and the usual getting in and out :)

Yes the exposed bars do add to inbury, but with the safety foam covers and being strapped in correctly and being low because of the buckets seats. I think you will be held away from the bars.

bride seat rails? where do you get these from mate? striaght fit no mesing around?

Usually a 6 point with a harness bar is the cage ;)
Though I'd say go 5/6 point for the harness to prevent 'submarining' in an accident :)

oh I got you andy. Things to come!! looking forward to it all actually. lets get the final push to have the car running and road worthy for JAE. we shall go on from there.

You'll be surprised how quick nice clean / refurbed parts go back together Chris

Not to but in on Lowriders post but i think he imported the seat rails

If you need a hand chris were all here. But if you are going for safety... be warned sounds ghetto... chop the original seat moints out and replace with steel box section. Weld the seat rails to them :) I believe I have a picture to explain. I'll edit and add :)

I imported them as Paul said and yes, direct fit with no messing around. You'd still need to sort harness points for the crotch straps though, but that's not a huge problem.

I'd imagine they would work out more expensive than welded in box section and generic seat runners but I would be wrong. IIRC they were arounf YEN 15000 each before shipping.
