PistonHeads.com: Scrappage Sends Classics To The Heap

I'm not gonna bother reading all this rubbish, but the thing I liked on the Hyundais was the 5-year rust warranty...(Or thereabouts)

At least they have the decency to spend a little extra on making the car last longer!

:)

The thread is about the scrappage scheme. Hyundai seem to have been dragged into it because that's where the figures come from. The i30 looks quite smart but so it should, it seems to have stollen it's design from every other hatch on sold in europe from the mondeo/newfocus headlights, to the golf roofline to the astra overall shape.

Perhaps the i10's, i20's and i30's can be the next 10-15 year old reliable, affordable and fuel efficient cars. Not only Micra's are capable of ticking these requirements.

but there are micras from 1986 that are still going, the only cars that are a similar age and still going are classics that people restore, micras are the only cars that do it because they are well built.

the micra won car of the year in 1993 because it was so well put together, two independent tests found micras to be the second best car ever built, only beaten by the Honda Civic,

micras are very underestimated, people see them all the time and think nothing of it but when it comes down to it they are the most hard wearing car on the road today, and they still will be.

a hyundai could never compete with that, most of the hyundais i worked on didn't make it to 8 years. my dad's hyundai accent had so many things wrong with it that it just had to be scrapped, the radiator fell out of the car because of the poor mounts and rust.

totally agree, this is why this scheme annoys me so much, i don't want a new car, they are all the same, all the ideas are stolen, they are all plastic covered engines with specialist tools to work on them and stupid computers everywhere that need resetting every 5 min. i like old cars because you can work on them, new cars are all about making money from after sales...

Remember that design wise, the K11 is 16 years old now, and design styles change over time.

Anyway, I'm with arnold. You'd be much better off buying a next to new second hand car then getting a brand new one. And to be honest, if I was in the market for buying a car already, then I'd just use that extra £2k to get some decent optional extra's, or see if I can move to the next model up.

the k11 design is 20 years old. the car was designed in 1989 for release in 1991 in japan. 1992 over here (if you can find a old pre facelift K plate k11) but the engine is even older designed. the CG13DE engine was developed from as early as 1988. that makes the engine 21 years old. try and think of another hatchback from 21 years ago with, Electronic fuel injection, Twin cam 16Valve cylinder heads, Fully aluminium block and head, ECU controlled ignition system, able to produce on a dyno (with all emisions crap taken off) 95+bhp from 1275CC.......
there isnt any. thats why the micra had the same engine base for 18 years, thats why the micra won car of the year 1993 and 1994 (2 years running nex one of only 2 cars to do that.....the other was the mini)

its just becuase they are so pleantiful that people ignore them.

You may like old cars, but not everyone does. People want new cars, you're being too ignorant to the fact that newer cars can offer better reliability and efficiency than older ones. You're too bone-headed to see past this silly Micra phase you have going on. Also, pointing out all the faults you can with Hyundai's is a but trivial towards your points. The Micra has horrible sill and cross-member rusts, that usually decides the fate of the car. You've worked on an OLD Hyundai, not a new one. The car you've worked on probably had previous bad owners who didn't give a #### about it. You cannot judge the whole Hyundai range based on a neglected piece of #### you fiddled with how ever long ago.

Awards and Recognition (For the Hyundai i30)

2007

Car of the Year for 2007 by CARSGuide [10] with the 1.6L CRDi model winning the Green Car of the Year award.[11]

2008

'Best Mid-size Car Under $28,000' by Australia's Best Cars to the Hyundai i30 SX petrol and i30 CRDi Turbo Diesel [12]

Hyundai i30 chosen as 2008 Car of the Year in Spain.[13]

2009

Best Family Hatch by STUFF.co.nz [14]

The Hyundai i30 has been judged the Supreme Winner in the 2009 AA Motoring Excellence Awards in New Zealand.[15]

Also, this lark about the car looking like this or that, it was designed by a person from BMW in Germany. So.. yea.

Nex is far from bone headed and ignorant! Are you the MD for Hyundai? Accept everyone has an opinion and yours is in the minority on this forum

Calm down man
A car is a Car..... there's no such thing as perfection and everyone has and is entitled to their own taste and opinion
though in the end this is a Micra Forum, and so 99%( made up figure lol ) are going to have some kind of Bias towards Nissan Micras.

At least there not french.

I like my car. I will also buy whatever car *I* like. As will anyone else.

Does anyone get the feeling this thread has gone far enough off topic to warrant lockage?

Nex is far from bone headed and ignorant! Are you the MD for Hyundai? Accept everyone has an opinion and yours is in the minority on this forum

He is bone headed towards the company, and ignorant towards their range. Why does it matter that I am even the minority? It doesn't mean my points are invalid.

true some people do like new cars, these people are known as car-retards, the kind of people who will call the RAC to change a wheel because they are too stuck up their own asses to get their hands dirty.

again in my experiance as a well travelled car enthusiast, new cars are crap, i have driven many cars i have done 1000s of miles in a week using different hire cars, both old and new, i have driven just about every corsa there has ever been and even as far as convertible jags and saabs, because they were out of normal cars. even the new compound charge golf. every single one i had a look under the bonnet, i had a fiddle and a play with and they are all plastic covered engines, plastic clips holding everything together and computer controlled crap that flashes warning lights at you.

I was driving a renault modis, it got up to 75mph and then the engine shut down and a warning light came on saying i needed to take it back to the dealer, i had to undo the battery and wait (actually the reconmendation from the hire company) it then did this 2 more times. thats because it had a computer in it that was trying to be smart. show me a new car without a shed load of computers in it?

you say that i have a silly micra phase and that i am bone idle? why are you so obsessed with Hyundai's? they are crap, i have worked on new ones and old ones. one Hyundai i was working on was an automatic, the gearbox had been changed twice along with the onboard computer but it would often stick to 1st gear only. show me a micra with that problem?

micras have rusty sills and rusty cross members, but they are easily fixed, they can be avoided if you take care, none of my cars are rusty, its not like a fault with the computer or anything like that. the problems you get with micras can be resolved with basic know how, and don't involve going to a main dealer like ALL new cars.

Hyundai's are the worst cars, and i can speak about the entire range even if i have not experienced the entire range because all car manufactures have their own standards. like nissan you will find the same engines in different models, and the same trim etc, a common fault can effect all the cars of that generation. so Hyundai's being badly built shows that as a company they do not design or assemble them well.

i don't know your level of experience with working on cars, but it sounds to me like you just drive them and take them to someone else if anything goes wrong. if that is the case then you don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to talking about reliability.

to be perfectly honest it does seem like you are just here to pick a fight, you know full well this is a nissan forum, you also know that micras are very good cars, yet you start posting agressive, insulting and childish posts for no reason. i have noticed many of your posts being agressive and insulting to other members, which is pretty much a ban according to the rules of this forum, and, like all forums this is a place to DISCUSS not argue, and of all the things to discuss this is a forum specifically for NISSAN MICRAS, so saying something like "silly micra phase" is an insult to everyone on this forum.

Everyone is entitled to a opinion regardless if you think it is valid, now everyone take two of these and come back tomorrow otherwise this thread will be locked and i will lock the lot of you in a room until you kiss and make up.

You're generalizing again.. people who like to buy new cars are people who are incapable of fixing their own cars? That's ridiculous! I'm not even going to go on with this point.

I've driven loads of new cars, I've driven Evo X's, IX's and RS6's and others. These cars are new and they sure as hell aren't crap. Just more generalizing. When I refer to your "Micra phase", I am not referring to your interest in Micra as a whole, I'm referring to how you put the Micra on a pedestal. There are plently of great fantastic cars out there, but you have this mindset where the Micra trumps them all.

You are bone headed towards the company; you have some sort of hate towards them for, it seems, no reason at all. Anything with Hyundai in it, you're ready to gun them down. When I say you are ignorant, my TRUE meaning incase you obviously take this as if I'm trying to offend you is that, you are showing a lack of understanding or acknowledgment to Hyundai's progress thus far. The Renault Modus, that's understandable, after it, it's french. HOWEVER, as I've said, companies progress, and Renault are known for their extremely safe cars.

Nissan Micra's go wrong in other areas, not just the rust, I used the rust example because you pointed out a rust problem with the radiator mounts on a specific Hyundai, which ever one it is you've played around with. There a other problems with Micra's, no doubt; no car is perfect, not even a Micra. I'm not saying Hyundai is indestructible; a selective amount of you are just being so bitter towards them because I feel you somewhat follow what everyone else says. The reason the majority of you had bought your Micra's is because you DIDN'T want to follow everyone else. However, it seems even though your cars are different, your attitudes are no different opposed to those Fiesta/Corsa boy racers.

Standards change, newer Nissans aren't as reliable as the old ones. Why can't Hyundai's cars be more reliable than their old vehicles?

Whatever it sounds like to you, don't believe it. This is the internet after all. Whatever goes wrong with my cars, I fix them myself. So don't assume such silly things. I am not here to pick a fight, as far as I'm concerned, we're having a debate about cars. For you to see this as a 'fight', then perhaps you should stay off the internet for a while. The posts I've made are childish? All my feedback is comprehensive in the way I feel, there's nothing juvenile about them. Your interpretation just isn't that good.

I never said Micra's are bad cars, and neither did I say Nissan was a bad brand. I prefer Nissan over any other company out there. However, I'm at no conclusion where only NISSAN can make good cars, or change their standards over an x amount of time. Time changes, companies change and so do their products.

ok let me explain this to you in terms you may understand.

as a nissan micra owner i often come into contact with people who don't share my enthusiasm for micras. There are several people who, no matter what i say, will never like micra's for some ungrounded hatered.

BUT i can live with that, for all the people who arn't willing to listen to my opinion, i do not have the time for. its their loss if they want to think a micra is a bad car an miss out on something that is actually very good for what it is.

but you can't do that, you are not happy until you have everyone on this NISSAN forum is loving hyundais.

to be perfectly honest i don't care either way about Hyundais, if a good one came along i wouldn't complain, i am just winding you up because you keep insulting my friends.

you are so full of anger because you can't find anyone who loves hyundais as much as you on a micra forum!

i found it hard to find people who like micra's as much as me, but thats why i came here, to be with other people who think like me, if you want to find people who think like you then you are in the wrong place, join a hyundai forum.

just accept that on a nissan micra forum, some people will actually think the micra is a very good car and would be insulted by some of the things you have said. even if you don't think you are being agressive or insulting, it is clearly coming off as that, so my advice to you is to back down and accept you cant change everyones mind.

Have you not been reading what I've been typing?..

Lmao, sorry I found that rather amusing. You blame Nex of generalising hyundai's and you've done exactly the same towards French cars.

The difference is, I've said french cars are unreliable, but I've recognized Renault's advancement in car safety.

My posts aren't trying to convince people to like Hyundai.. my real aim is just to convince people that companies change and so do their standards.. it just happens to be Hyundai we're talking about.

Have you not been reading what I've been typing?..

no i didn't, did you read what i typed?

you are still on a mission to make people think like you do, you have to realise that isn't the way the world works.

I genuinly don't care if Hyundais are good or not because there are many cars i would rather buy before i start looking at Hyundais.

if i have to buy a new car, the first thing i would look for is Nissan, if i didn't like what i saw, i would look at Jap cars in general, and THEN maybe i would look at other companies like Hyundais.

but do you understand my point? you will meet people who will not share your view, no matter how hard you stomp your feet and scream and shout. its what makes the world interesting, having people with different points of view.

I have no real opinion on Hyundais, i don't care if they are good or bad, i didn't come to a Nissan Micra forum to discuss how good Hyundais are....

I sure hope Ed doesn't see all this, this is fun!

While we're at it can we drop the french cars are rubbish thing please, sure the electrics can be a bit funny from time to time, but a lot of cars made in europe have french electrics in now. Mwahahaha

Continue...

I can't say I'm a fan of French cars personally, but Hyundai is contradicting himself terribly by saying all french cars are unreliable...kind of like saying Hyundais are crap...or something along those lines :wasntme:

Will we see a 70 year old k10 with 1000000 miles. Would be cool though eh? Lets dig a hole, stick a k10 in a big bin liner and bury it. Then in 50 years, any of us still alive can dig it up and race some anti-gravity fusion powered computer control boredom machines.

this is so much fun to read thanks for cheering up my day some french cars do have electrical issues it seems renaults in particular however this is why they have warrentys why else would you see so many driving school clio`s plus without renault there would be no nissan so can we please stop the french bashing

also my brother had a hyundai once it was written off by a citreon ambulance noone was hurt him and his girlfriend managed to get out get all his audio out of the boot and walk away we were quite impressed with it

You know, you're wasting your time. Stop talking to me as if I'm a child, if you had actually read what I've typed, then you'd know what, when and why I'm saying what I am saying. You don't see how you're so arrogant with your opinion. You are saying my opinion is a piece of #### because I'm saying it on a Micra forum. This THREAD is usually based around Hyundai; this is the only thread I've ever spoke about Hyundai throughout the whole forum.

I can't say I'm a fan of French cars personally, but Hyundai is contradicting himself terribly by saying all french cars are unreliable...kind of like saying Hyundais are crap...or something along those lines :wasntme:

Yes, I believe I have contradicted myself in some ways; but I still recognize Renault's ability to create safe cars. I do generalize somewhat also, but I admit it. You guys need to realize I'm not putting down Micra's, some of you are being no different to those who say Micra's are crap. If this is the kind of bigotry attitude you all want to have, then perhaps you should show more respect to people who do actually like Saxo's, Clio and other Micra counterparts.

Anyways, this is getting too repetitive. I'm out of this thread.

This is useless...
Arguing isn't going to change each others opinion, so why bother?
for me anyway.. Hyundai isn't an exciting brand, but maybe they aren't trying to be.

Hyundai, thank you for ignoring my subtle hint about calming down and not taking it too far. You have commented when people don't read what you have typed so why ignore my comments. As a outsider looking in on this discussion you come across being defensive/bordering on always having to be right and forcing your views on others.

All this has done is stirred up others because you can't accept that some people think Hyundai's are undesirable cars. Honestly why can't Hyundai follow the industry standard of stalk placement, why do the indicator stalks have to be on the other side on a 07 plate coupe?

Unfortunately this thread was meant to be about how classic cars and modern classics, since it has gone so far off topic that it will now be forever locked.

If anyone wishes to discuss this further please feel free to PM me.

Mike
