new car what should it be?

1.6 almera is ok. Getting on a bit now, bodywork tends to go. I wouldnt bother with anything french, or even a VAG, as they are not as reliable then they used too be. Unless its a really hot one, then you can forgive it to a degree :)
 
480 turbo. At 23 insurance should be ok (11 i think). You could have a car, putting out 170bhp (in optimum conditions) for £500 - £600. Handling is by lotus... with good tires its an mr2 beater. (although not the mr2 turbo :p )

The N16 is an OK car, not as good as an N15, but it is newer and the bodywork is better. A few little faults, but nothing that would go marjorly wrong. You'd be better off with the 1.8 though, they are a lean burn engine designed for econamy, but you will love the extra low down torque for town driving.
 
Between the almera an the focus, probably the focus in reality for what your needs are. With 2k you will get a nice focus, there won't be any N15's around that price. You could wait it out and try and find a minter, but due to the age of them, they are starting to go on the arches.
 
yeah thats what I thought I heard focus's are good cars maybe they have a belt as apposed to a chain but Im sure I can manage

but group 9, same as a primera and they have bigger engines I think. I was reading that french cars are unrealiable.
 
I agree with Richj, those Volvo's are damn cool. If you want a different car, however, perhaps a Nissan 100NX? They're 1.6.

Yeah, elec windows, mirrors, heated seats, 160bhp/ton with a simple mod (i.e turn the boost up). They are very cheap for what they are. Mainly because volvo's are, volvo's.

Yeah, the rallye appeals, there are no electrics to fail!

There are two models the S1, a 1.3 giving 0-60 9.6s, and the S2 a 1.6 giving 8.5s 0-60.
They appeal as a drivers car to me! The downside is they're french!
 
almera n15, 1.4 si, or 1.6 sri. both decent...what ever you do dont buy the n16 there terriable!

or a corrolla ae111 g6/g6r, there very nice :)
 
It's a Nissan 100NX, inside it's a Nissan Sunny. However, you get a nice GA16DE engine, and EXCELLENT handling for a FWD car. You can take off the roof panels too. There cars go for very cheap.

i agree with the french part, but VAG motors are solid, the turbo VAG motors are sweet as a nut, i've driven a glanza, saxo vtr's (terrible!) and they just dont compare. on the audi a3 forum the a hell of a lot of a3/s3 owners cars have done 100,000 miles plus with no complaints and still run bang on. of course i have a biased opinion, but thats just my two pence.
 
Sure it'll do the miles, but you'll go through a hell of lot of sensors. My friend is an Audi master tech, all i hear is horror stories.

I also had a VAG, that car cost me a lot of money.

as with any car tho, its all about picking the right car, servicing and repairs are only expensive if you let the audi/vw dealer con you out of money, one of the first things i did when i got the audi was change the water pump, cam belt and tensioners just to be on the safe side and did it all for a little over £100, an audi specialists quoted between £400-£600! as with any car look for a full service history etc etc and you'll be fine. as long as it's not french :)
 
if your wise then repairs dont have to cost an arm and a leg, for instance it costs ALOT more to take my car to an audi specialist than to my local garage, i'd happily leave it in the hands of my local rather than drive to an audi specialists and get charged more for the same work. if you want a good all rounder then a golf or an a3 would be a good choice there much better built than most jap cars, got alot of grunt especialy if you go for the turbo but the 1.8 is substatial enough. the focus or the almera are ok. best thing to do is to get out there and test drive some cars! its hard to give advice because everyone is different.

Mine did. Still cost me a fortune.
 
Only reason I decided against a almera is apparently they rust easily, I dont know but I think focus wont rust as badly?
 
indeed.

maybe a more specific specification would help. Faster than a micra, no rust, solid engine, less than £2k, easy for a novice mechanic to fix, presumably cheap to run?
