My 1989 March Super Turbo Rebuild

Yes the basic layout of the block and head is the same, the pistons are 66mm in diameter, 68mm for the ma10, the cylinder head gasket is different but nissan do not mae them anymore so resorting to using a figaro one for tthe moment, If I get a few years from it I dont really mind.

The 4 fuel injectors are underneath the ECCS part of the inlet manifold. No huge plans for it really at the moment, focusing on getting it ready for a few track days, may address the cooling system with a better radiator and tidy some un needed bends in the boost pipework.

The st is far from simple in the engine department , but once yo have ripped it apart a few times and put 4 clutches and rebuilt a few gearboxes there are a joy to work on lol. Its all about have the correct tools to access tight areas , I have built these up over the 6 year ownership so I never run into issues needing any tools for a particular job

:)

Well its a good thing I removed the head of my engine. It was cracked , and I mean seriously cracked, its a miricle the car actually ran before and did trackdays lol.

Anyway I had an old head that I had stored annd forgot about, I got a full recon job done on this , light skim ( to keep compression ratio low as possible ) new valve seals, seats cut etc. I cannot wait to hear this run again

I'll get pics up later

Got some time this weekend to cross the other side on the country to work on the car.I got alot done ,I fitted reconditioned head ( new valve seals, valve seats recut, light skim).Got the timing belt in, valve clearances set, inlet and exhaust manifolds on with new turbo, intercooler refitted and piped, air box in also .Nearly ready to fire it up I just have to chase down my vacuum pipe diagram, fill it with fresh oil and coolant and modify the seat rails for the new seats.

maybe mate spend some money on exhaust manifold rather than this turbo and new inter cooler pipes in better shape and position. wish you will get the best of it

Well the turbo needed to be reconditioned so thats where I spent the money, It would cost 600-700 euro to get a manifold made and I just dont have it. I agree though a manifold and maybe a full new exhaust from the turbo back would make some job of it

i just propsed it to you baz because u love this car, it runs great and with that love and money you can make it even better. hope in future u will upgrade it. my manifold cost 550€ and turbo (wrong digit sorry)680€ brand new. consider as your next step. nice work keep it up! will u run on factory boost?

i hope my next move will be a forged engine but no money for now

Well Busy weekend. I got the car running started up on the first turn after priming the turbo.

And after a spin:)

After driving it and getting it warmed up I did a compression test , all cylinders were between 155-160psi except for no.3 cylinder which was 149psi but that cylinder had a larger amount of material taken off it when I melted a piston back in 2006 so bound to have a little less compression. So happy with that but I still noticed the odd bit of blue smoke on lifting the throttle. Had a quick look around and realised the engine is breathing quite heavy so I piped the breathers in to a catch can and the smoke has dissappearedo_O

So I reckon I might have a cracked ring land . I drove it 200km back home with no problems , driving perfectly although need a set of plugs as got a few miss fires up around 6500rpm

Well done Baz, for some reason I thought you had taken all the pistons out etc too. You need to check that compression really. Sadly that does mean taking piston no.3 out.

Oranje, 160whp is not reliable from stock. Been there done that etc. Stock/figaro headgasket will not take that.

I know I should have Ed , I reckon that time when I was over for Jae when it was knocking caused some damage that why she is breathing heavy

possibly, it was a little unwell. but seemed otherwise ok.

Seems alot more eager to pull though with the higher compression. Last results were around 120psi per cylinder. Could I suspect a broken ring land?

Right small update I gave it a service today, fresh set of plugs but I am still getting a persistent miss fire up at about 6000k rpm if I take the boost above 0.9bar .

I have spent the whole day checking fuel and ignition system and all the usual culprits but I cant get it to stop , any ideas lads?

its something like my previous problem. if you like check or of your flanges (inlet manifold, bypass valve), change maf and maybe another ecu. also check another distributor. thats why i have two spare because now with the upgrade ()like yours) distributor isnt running well especially in high rpm for long. valves and everything on your block set properly?

Should be ok , all valves are set , I'll go over the vacuum pipes and the distributor,The car was sitting in a garage for over a year ,parts dont just break. I reckon it could be something to do with the higher compression may need a tweek

Baz, I'm working on coil pack conversion for nissans that may interest you?....

Reads the CAS signal takes input from ecu and then converts it to coil packs...

sounds like an excellent swap...it would be nice to have more accurate spark timing and being able to do away with the dizzy etc. Will it be 1 coil per cylinder?

I was actually gona ask a stupid question: why not go from the Turbo to a 1st intercooler, then to the supercharger to a 2nd intercooler? BUT I think it seems its better from Turbo and supercharger to UFO valve and then to the intercooler and I think it's already your setup :p

Not enough room I guess also a pressure drop across the 2 coolers. It work fine the way it is

with this setup, lancia tried to S4 but never worked properly. I want to meet (if he is alive) the genius that thought all of this piping and ufo valve of this and the one who constructed all these parts . it is awesome i believe

Also with the right fitting of ic pipes St will run smother and breath a lot better and have a better looking result that the factory mess and have more space to work.

It worked fine. Its exactly the same pipe layout as the March ST but with an additional intercooler. All the same bypass configuration etc, just different controls and a supercharger that is always engaged.

My coworker in Japan is a former Nissan engineer how worked on the cgxx engines and he knows the one who developed the MA engines...

Got my problem sorted , it was the ignition module. From what I have read if it faulty you get no spark at all but other site say it gradually gets worse until it wont do high rpm under load. Happy f'ing days

What a great day, still down on power , had to make up my time on the braking and the corners

And here is a mate's vid to promote the trackday , I am in the yellow civic and the march is at the end

I would not worry at all about minor or even medium black smoke on gear changes....it should be running reasonably rich on the track to keep everything cool and safe. Do you have a dyno graph with AFRs? Unless they are under 11.5:1 there is nothing to worry about, even then it's not so bad

The thing is I never used to get black smoke just the odd small blue puff. Its using a serious amount of fuel even normal road driving like more than my Impreza (2.5) . If I turn the boost up past 0.9bar it will run 10:1 afr .
The car was mapped for 1.2bar 6 years ago with a afr of 11.5 the whole way across
