K10 Head Gasket Prices...

Shaun

 i fear my headgasket has gone simply because it hesitates when pulling away and i have white smoke/steam coming from my exhaust...
any ideas on how much it would cost me at a reasonable garage as i have no clue about taking the engine apart! :(

the k10 does emit quite a bit of steam anyway especially this weather, if it has gone, its easy to change with the haynes!

it doesnt seem to be drinking coolant because i have only recently had the water pump changed and since then the car remains cool bad for fuel economy though! checked and its staying still and as for changing it MR.ST lol help...
ill have to get someone i trust to look over it dont want no cowboys...
also if your head gasket has gone anyone paid for one to be fitted before?
just incase i get that lazy!

does it hesitate every time? mine has big problems when it is cold - starts OK but dies immediately if i dont keep it in revs.. dont have to mention that keeping cold engine in revs is not the bad idea.. since i mounted oil pressure meter i try to avoid it, but it is simply impossible.. i was suspecting choke, but when the engine is cold, it is closed and when hot, it is wide open.. also had some problems with coolant.. do you hear bubbling when you stop the engine or does the coolant smell weird? does the oil level rise?

its weird changed the oil today with new filter the old oil was black wasnt frothy milk was no white gunk under the cap coolant appears to be fine, because i know absolutly nothing i cant tell what im looking for you hear someone say head gasket and you get paranoid!

Probably a carb problem not the headgasket...but if you want to change it anyway mine was about £50 for the gasket set and £12 for the cam belt kit

the cam belt has been changed about a month ago along with new sparks and ht leads... cleaned the k &n too hmmm... carb then :glare:

What you mean hesitates, when does it do it? All the time? Only when cold etc? Does it cut out?

all the time just when im pulling away it will stop... think about it then carry on as normal, feels like its pulling a little bit in higher gears, gotta feeling if its not gasket related its the carb... it doesnt cut out

have you checked the vacuum lines? also, try to clean the carb - there are special sprays for cleaning.. you have to warm up the engine, then kill it, open intake, spray it inside, clean all visible parts etc.. then start the engine (will take longer to start and will also need some help from the throttle), let it run for a minute and then spray the parts inside again while running.. do not use big shots, or the engine will stop (instructions might be a bit different, with some sprays you have to let it be for a few minutes before 2nd start)

thankyou! will try it as soon as possible (Y)

Ive just clicked about you having the cam belt changed...

Have you check the timing is still in???

I'll put money on the timing being out!

i got a pm earlier from Jay sayong that the timing could be out aswell what would be the cheapest way to check this as i have very limited tools

Ok well get the car running upto 1/2 on the temp gauge ( you might want to get the thermostat done first)

The use a 12 or 13mm spanner (cant remember) and undo the dizzy...1 bolt

DO NOT LET IT TURN LOADS OR TURN IT LOADS

It only need a couple of mm each way to change...

Basically turn the dizzy CAREFULLY anti clock wise if you are on the pssenger side doing it

You will hear the engine rev up slightly

move it about 2mm then do the bolt back up, the dizzy now cannot move

Go out and test it...

You really should get a strobe and check the timing on the crank pully, it should be at 0deg on the indicator

If you can get a strobe (halfords £20) let me know and ill tell you how to do it correctly

Even advance your timing ;)

i think my dad may have a strobe light but thats in somerset which is ages away might have to leave it for a bit as xmas has chewed my wallet

in theory the new belt will have advanced your timing anyway shaun, i doubt if its a timing problem personally (if its over-retarded it will just be gutless all through the revs, and if its over-advanced it would be pinking under load) :)

But when i changed my cam belt it was juddering on acceleration, check the timing and it was well out, after adjustment it was fine...

Have a look at it, might not be

well i think ill definately get a thermostat would that squeeze on gasket stuff be ok or should i buy one ready made? also ill get the timing check but its not ass essential as it isnt causing so much harm,
cant wait till february when i can get this suspension sorted to its like driving a boat! (Y)

deff get the stat for a fiver its worth eliminating it. (see guide in other thread). like i said mine is only on with blue hylomar, infact i dont think its ever had a gasket in it as long as ive owned it.

any garage will have a timing gun it only will take them 5 mins to check it, i got mine off a car boot sale, it was only a pound. but there only about £20 anyway, and there a very worth while investment
