March 2010
Make way for the new Micra! Nissan’s all-new supermini took a bow in Geneva amid news that the car will come with a choice of two hyper-efficient petrol engines, and no diesels.
Scheduled to launch in the UK in October for less than £10,000, the Micra will initially be powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol unit making 80bhp and emitting 115g/km. That will be followed by a radical new supercharged direct-injection version of the same engine which makes 98bhp and cuts emissions to just 95g/km, dropping it into the free Road Tax category.
The styling echoes the old car with its arched window line, but the Japan-designed car has been softened in looks to appeal to markets around the world, including the US. There it will be sold as a three-box saloon that the UK won’t see. A third bodystyle using the Micra’s new platform will be a replacement for the Note supermini-MPV, which is due in the UK in a couple of years.
The new Micra is between 50-80kg lighter than the model it replaces, but is slightly longer at 3.8 metres. Standard kit is promised to be high, with Nissan offering a clever device to let owners know whether their car will fit into a parking space. Also standard on high-end models will be a glass sunroof and keyless entry.
