So it's against the arm to advance and with to retard

Yeah, because if you move it in same direction as the rotor arm the arm lines up with the ht lead protruding bits later in the engine revolution

Looking from passenger side of the bay you rotate left to retard. Towards the front of the car.

Think of the rotation of the camshaft. Easiest way to remember

Adjusted the dizzy blindly and now have a stable idle of 750rpm, as you'd expect I'm over the moon it's just a shame that's the most I'll be able to do this weekend
