Summer oils and winter oils

Brutal Honesty
Since this is the first car I've actually cared about I'm all for the longevity of my engine.

It seems like it hasn't been cared for in the past, with such a noisy chain etc.

I'm currently running Castrol Magnatec 10w/40 oil. When the engine is cool and the oil is cool, the chain is hardly noticeable. When the oil gets to temperature and obviously thins, the chain becomes much noisier.

I was thinking of using a thicker oil for the summer and sticking to 10w/40 in the winter. Any suggestions?

Personally, I'd go for 5w-30 in the winter and 5w-40 in the summer. Here's a cool test, find and empty clear placcy bottle and pour in about 40ml of oil. Put it in the deep freeze for an hour and be amazed at how gooey it goes even at -15c .
