Please help with Rust & Paint

Hello every one,

Can some help me please with this axle rust-treating and painting issues?

I have somewhat cleaned it, but don't know if its enough or not.
What about any treatment before painting it?

I googled and there different products out there i.e:

1 Kurst
2 Hammerite
3 POR-15
4 Shutz
5 Red Oxide
6 Waxoil

Has any one used any of these and how?

Any helpful suggestions advice is really appreciated.

Regards

You already removed and cleaned these rusts out. if i was you then i will put hammerite kurust on this axle first. let them dry out first then put rust primer paints such as zinc or red oxide. after that you can put finish paint which are hammerite metal paint/ waxoyl .

there are load info in search bar or even in youtube as well.

The whole thing is stopping water and oxygen from getting to the area... If you take the axle and put it in no a non humid box with no oxygen it will be preserved...

Just prep it hardcore like... Clean as a whistle ... Grind and wire rush... Prep the surface with great car and primer and paint it... You minimising any and oxygen getting to the metal... Unless you send it away to get acid dipped and dip painted... You ain't saving it. Simple as that... The game is basically protecting it for as long as possible. Prolonging death mate.

You don't want krust to dry out mate, the gel/liquid is an electrolyte for a chemical reaction that converts the rust, if it dries up it does sweet FA.

Very many thanks everyone for your input.

I had a trip to the Halfords and somewhat clear now about paint and its associates. I understand that "Hammerite", is the company name that manufactures, different products such as Waxoyl, kurust, underseal and different paints. I also understand that Primer paint is something which is used as undercoat.

What me confused is that, why there so many products doing the same thing! Or its a simple claim to sell products! I noticed there were paints which can applied directly onto the rusted metal without the primer. What I did not understand is why use primer if the paint can do the some job?

I am thinking of what Frank suggested, removed the rust somewhat (which I have done) brush paint and use wayoil+engin oil to keep it waxy.

krust converts rust on surfaces that may be left as bare metal, hammerite direct to rust paint is more for VERY faint surface rust, the light stuff thats from being left outside overnight and just brushes off. The two together can be considered a belts and braces approach. Waxoil is an over paint rust protection product with arguable effectiveness.

Thanks Enuo,

Since I've removed the worst rusts the use kurust seems a wast. However, I am not fully decided/ clear on the use primer paint. If the direct to rust paint is applied and waxoil used to protect it should be enough. Isn't that right?

I waxoiled my spitfire. Didn't protect it as well as the oil leaking from the gearbox onto the chassis did. Waxoil is cheap and ygwypf

Was the waxoile hardened and chiped away or something?
Frank suggested and I read some other sites as well that waxoil can be mixed with engine oil 50/50 to give a sort of permanent waxy texture so it will not chip away.

However, will the primer do a better job than? Does worth that hassle?

What about anchor grease? That is used for boats and agricultural vehicles.

I've always used copper slip grease to stop rust. Used it on easy to access places...like inside body panels etc. Stops it dead I have found. If you stop air getting to metal = no rust. So a good coat of hammerite sort of stuff will do the job. lag it on. I use it on my gates at home, knock off the flaky stuff and wack it on, no repeat rust for 9 years now. Works for me. :)

POR-15 rust preventative paint is much better, bit more expensive but was recomended to me by a Merc specialist and is pretty bulletproof.

Thanks Enuo,

Por-15 is quite good but the draw backs are that it gets hard quite quick to the extent that by the time you get to the bottom of the tin it is almost un-useabl. 2ndly its quite expensive.

Thanks davyboy,

It am considering the grease option somehow as preventative measure.

Years ago when i was a kid in east london, the geezer took his old Datsun door panels off and had some used oil and was paint brushing it inside the door, i asked why you doing it, he said used oil is he best to protect the door from water as sometimes the seal dont exactly help the water run of fom the window but rund down the window which is logged in the door causing rust!! ever since then ive done that,. not on my micra but the alpina i had and i tell you what 8 years after i checked it and i wiped it and still looks the same the day i painted used oil in it so it did do its job!!!

Thanks you very much every one for their input.

About used engine oil: I was reading somewhere that it has a health hazards.

Is it true?

Repeated exposure to used engine oil puts you at a high risk of developing dermatitis. Some people are more susceptable than others but its generally people who work with it bare skinned day to day that are affected. Still, get a cheap pack of disposable vinyl gloves, saves on getting crud out from under your nails too!

And if you get industrial dermatitis, you'll have it for life.

I usually wear gloves at work anyway because theres loads of dust around the place the lasers put out when cutting holes thats not very nice, but any sort of oil is considered a double glover ;)

Very many thanks to every one who replied and posted and suggested.

I have completed the cleaning of axle and painted.

And here is how I did it:

1. Washed the axle with water and car shampoo.
2. Used a broken kitchen knife to remove the bubled rust/paint.
3. Used wire brush with drill to clean the accessable rust.
4. Cleaned with white spirit and an old tooth brush and some wire brush.
5. Used Kurust initially for the areas where too rusty and not cleaned with brush.
6. Painted 2 some times 3 coats of Hammerite smooth black paint.

And here is the completed product.

Raised the rear of the car to check if I could put the axle and found out there some rust forming. Here is the video. Can some suggest how to deal with these rust?

Regards
