PistonHeads.com: Smoke And Drive?

I agree.

People are already being done for eating kit kats and apples, so how is smoking any different. Besides, i'm fed up of people chucking fag butts out the windows! But it'l be badly enforced just like the mobile phone ban. You still see loads of people driving around using mobiles.

My boss got caught on his phone driving, a taxi driver took a pic of him with... HIS PHONE!!!

What is wrong with the world, they will look stupid when they realise it didn't lower the accident count.

i agree. There were numorous times i used to drop my cigarette and nearly crash!! (not literally obv) I stopped smoking in the car in the end. I'm proud to say i gave up 2 years ago tho :)

Or people could get handsfree/bluetooth and just wait 'till they get to their destination before sparkinh up...

Some people can't even drive with 2 hands on the wheel, so god knows how bad they are whilst smoking

'It means that if a driver crashes his or her car while smoking they could be charged with driving without due care and attention. That could mean a fine of up to £2,500, three to nine penalty points or even a ban.'

What if you don't crash though? Is there still a fine/points?

'Other additions include drivers being advised to stop if they are dazzled by the sun.'

And that's just rediculous really.

I wonder how much all of this is actually going to reduce accidents..

what a load of utter crap this is......what next ? picking your nose while driving ? scratching your self ? talking to the passengers in your car ? looking at people while your driving ? changing the radio station or cd ? driving with one arm resting on the door ? ......... does any one still drive like they where taught ( feeding the wheel through there hands ) and not crossing your hands over ?

To be fair if you crashed as a result of any of the items mentioned above you could probably be charged for driving without due care and attention anyway.

True Ed, but everyone must change radio station or cd's.. Infact, pretty much everything andy said I reckon we've all done at least once. Even if you don't want to admit to picking your nose :p

Cars will soon have 1 seat, no stereo, auto indicators and wipers and handcuffs on the steering wheel to make sure you use both hands. Oh and headgear involving blinkers so you don't look sideways....

it is just there to protect you, what if say a young man on his phone driving into someone you love, would you call for it to be banned then? by the time you agree to the ban it is a bit late for your love one. (a bit harch i know)

prevention is better than cure i'd say.

Or don't drive! They're probably doing all this to discourage people off the roads and onto public transport, but that's never going to happen.

That sounds about right, the government would never just come out and say something, they instead waste our time on doing it this way.

Whilst on conspiracy theories I think global warming is a scam to do the same.

If I suddenly disappear without a trace you know what happened... lol.

I think this is overhype to be honest. It was all there anyway, now its just written down in the highway code.

agreed, but my view is that smoking should be totally banned!! but that bring up so many issues, mainly to do with the tax and how the gov. will find it elsewhere, i.e car tax!

The gov. could legalise prostitution, that'd bring in loads of tax, then smoking could be made completely illegal everywhere.

The government would make sure it was a real earner, regular drug and disease tests, clean licensed premises, a real winner for them.

Olly just get a girlfriend and you wont wanna pay for it :p - Can we get back to topic please lol

Yeah, not gunna happen, I have a face too ugly, even for radio.

we are all different mate theres always some out there for ya the time will come looks dont mean anything to me its more personality and humour not every 1 judges a book by its cover

It maybe a good thing....i'm a smoker but i don't drive and smoke...nobody told me to do it i just decided to do it myself because i'm an individual who can think for oneself... Why doesn't the Government go the whole hog and ban Electronic contraptions...Sat-navs, CD players, Computers, Blue tooth mobile phones? Accidents are caused by to many factors and smoking a ciggy at the wheel is one of them. Ok so we don't have the statistics to show how many accidents are caused by smoking but then again we as a nation aren't really that bothered to go and search for the 'facts'. there are lots of rules and regulations that millions of people don't adhere to everyday and that's because as individuals we have to do things our own way to actually get anywhere.....

I have enough to do on the road watching out for very slow moving old farts, White van men, drivers failing to stay on their side of the road, mothers with screaming kids, boy racers, Post office vans, Dogs, Cats, Pedestrians jaywalking....

It's a rule not a Law...you can either adhere to it or ignore it...it's up to you.......or you can just go along with the flow of things just because the Government says so....

Petrols going up 2p soon......bothered? thought not.....

The fact is though that it's not an endorsable offence (as of yet) it's an advisory notice which means that you will get a slap on the wrist, it's not like the ban on using phones while driving (whole new debate in itself please don't shout lol).
