Mechanically minded person :D

Hi guy's just wondering if anyone with working knowledge of the suspension might fancy earning some beer tokens. Ive got the new springs, but lack the confidence to crack on, fearing really messing it up. So if any kind soul in lichfield/brum kinda area fancies tutoring a dunce for an afternoon, please feel free to pm me for contact details :D many thanks!

Lol, it was the thought of changing springs on the front that really put me off, have heard that you can use g clamps but until I have seen it done id probably end up with a spring in the face hehehe

Good point Al, don't take chances with car springs ever . I got a set of compressors off eBay for about a tenner which work perfectly :). George is right about the rattle gun though for the top nuts.

I was gonna say, ive changed the fromt shocks on an old escort, many moons ago, I found copious amounts of wd40 and a lumphammer losened up the nuts, although I was replacing those too, is it quite a high torque rate they need to be re-set at? Last time I was going by tighter is better :p

Ordered some spring compressors off ebay. So if im gonna do this myself... How do I go about releasing the springs from the mounts on the strut? Is it a case of a couple of nuts or is it a wee bit more tricky than that?

The top mount nut comes off and the spring lifts out. But make sure to compress it till its loose or nearly loose before you remove the top mount completely

Right, so compressor on the spring compress untill pressure is off top mount remove top mount then, unwind compressor so spring is under no more pressure? With the rears, jack up an support rear axle, do I have to remove the rear shocks in order to lower the axle enough to release the spring? Bit unsure as to releasing the rear :s

Yeah thats how you do the fronts, remember to get the top mount parts all the correct way round. With the rears i jack the car up from the rear tow eye and use a jack pole to bend the springs out and for putting the new ones in :p just ensure the springs are seated in the rubber stops correctly :)

If your not sure about doing it my way just undo the strut tops from inside the boot using mole grips on the slot and a spanner on the nut, that'll let you drop the axle a bit more
