Help with a broken x-trail

A family members x-trail has today shown a fault. The engine management is lit and when you press the accelerator pedal it takes a good few seconds before it responds then it very slowly builds up revs and only reaches a maximum of 2000rpm. It's a 2004 model, I've hooked up a code reader with no luck so looking for tips of what it could be before its taken to a garage :(
 
You think I should check the turbo is spinning? I don't think I can check for boost as its undriveable, any idea how I could check if the filter is ok?
 
yeh, remove the inlet hose i guess stani, and check its spinning eh (garrett gt1852v ? non wastegated) , and the dpf may be choked up if its not purging for some reason ? edk is the dci guru i think eh (aoc)
 
Right now I have no idea to be honest, ill check the turbo is spinning and see how hard it is to remove and clean the dpf, I don't want to spend a lot of time on it if its simply wasting it. Thanks for help and ill update with any finds
 
If the management light is on it may not rev up fully this i failsafe built into the software by the manufacturers to prevent any further or serious damage if a fault is detected, can i ask what code reader you used? It a 2.2 dci ?
 
Hi stani, has the fuel filter ever been changed? They also seem to not like non-genuine if it has? Been told its quite common cause for running issues on these at work, unsure if this applies to 2.2 though :s
 
we've never had any problem using non genuine filters at work, we specialise in diesel motors, maybe a vac line has split going to the turbo? Or may need reading with a different diagnostics machine, as i bought one of the cheaper ones from snap on and it doesnt show codes and others do if i use it too
 
Just a suggestion from what I've experienced, working at a Nissan garage we've just had a number of x trails in for running issues that's turned out to be a £10/£15 filter that sometimes gets over looked at service and thought it's worth mentioning as it's cheaper than jumping straight into turbo/dpf issues :)
 
If it gradually happened it could be compression, if it happened suddenly has to be air or fueling... theres not alot else it could be really, diesels are pretty basic eh.

And it was an overnight fault so it cant be all that bad
 
My DCi used to have a very strange limp mode when the fuel pressure was too high that didn't always cause the CEL to come on too. Suction valve is also quite a common issue with the YD22.

Don't suppose you have an OBDII code reader anywhere?

Edit: just read that you've tried that, very strange! FYI these were the trouble codes I was getting:

  • P1610, P1614 and:
  • P1272 (doesnt light up the CEL) - This one's like a super-limp mode, I ended up slowing down to 30mph on a dual carriageway . Unsurprisingly on further investigation:

I worked at nissan 5+yrs id say the boost control valve (front right of intercooler) is fubar, I came across loads with hardly any power but it would rarely throw a cel. Customers often never realised because it happens usually very gradually.

It will work.

Boost pressure sensors have been round a longggg time.
But if this has one I'd say its not working... that or there's a gaping hole in the inlet pipes

ive just had a turbo off an x-trail at work and no boost sensors, wastegate actuated off the boost pressure, i dont wana do another one what an ass lol
 
Should be a boost sensor bolted to the intercooler. And boost control valve under front of intercooler. It has more than the wastegate to control boost.
 
I've not long looked and couldn't see anything either.....

Small update I think I worked out the code reader previously tried was a canbus protocol reader where I need an iso/kwp one so ive bought one 10 mins ago off amazon and hope it will be here Saturday. Cheers for the help so far
 
Ok so the first 2 code readers wouldnt connect, 3rd one did but showed no faults, now that ive seen the engine in the light ive found quite a bad oil leak from the intercooler (cant see a hole but theres an oily patch on the underside) also turns out the boost pipes before and after the turbo are covered in oil internally. Its coming from the engine breather which connects to the pipe before the turbo but after the maf. Unplugging the maf makes no difference, unplugging the egr makes no difference, ive opened the egr and cleaned inside (twas a bit sticky too) turbo is spinning freely.
I cant do a compression test because i dont have a diesel set...

Can a blocked dpf cause pressure to get back into the engine and push oil out the breather?
 
They are always oily inside the intake pipes... its a turbo diesel. Prob from the engine breather.... nowt to worry about. The intercoolers leak around the seams of the endtanks, common issue.

Yeah but really oily? I read its only meant to be a mist and it seemed to be pools of oil at each joint

No oil was leaking from the joints until i opened them up, only from the underside of the intercooler. Do diesels need all that air to even climb the revs? The other things ill try is disconnect the dpf and see if it'll rev up, and somehow check if the wastegate is operating

cant you fit a boost gauge stani ?
