budget air filter

I am modding my micra on a serious budget so instead of gettin a K&N etc i got a ITG single ram pipe filter for £12.00 from Aldon, I attached it to the end of the cold air pipe behind the headlight with a jubelee clip and removed the standard air filter. loads more noise better throttle response and my flat spot has gone £12.00 well spent if you ask me!:grinning:

If its worked for you and your happy that good.

Just bear in mind that due to the filters location the filter will get dirtier quicker, also you may find some dirt getting through the filter.

To improve in future to your tastes i would strongly recommend removing the standard airbox and standard air feed and replacing with some large bore pipes and hoses.

The best setup is a K&n filter in the standard airbox with a twin modified air feed

its made from the same foam as any other air filter so dirt getting through is not an issue. and it is well easy to clean the instructions said to hoover it if its a bit dirty or wash with warm water if verry dirty. as for increasing the bore of the pipes that is a good idea but my standard exhaust is the restriction at the moment. hopefully i should have a second hand gsxr motorbike can to replace that soon

you would be better to place the fiulter on the throttle body, cos dont forget that the air box and induction system isnt ait tight... so although your filter may filter the air coming in from the front... what about the stuff that gets in through the gaps behind it/??

I disagree, for optimum throttle response you should have 130% of the engines maximum capacity of filtered air before the throttle body.

So, in the case of a 1.0L you should have 1.3 Litres of filtered air between the filter and the throttle body.

This is why the standard airbox is good, as placing a filter on the throttle body reduces this volume and pulls in hot air.

The airbox, protects it from the heat a little bit, but also maintains a volume of filtered air.

I've experimented with various different air intakes and filters, and my best result was found with a modified airbox.

so what modsdid u do to ur airbox i used to have a k&n but took it off and sold it so now have standard airbox wat did u do to urs cheers deano

Hey Phil, on this 130% volume thing, does it make any difference if you have more than the 130%, or is the 130% (i.e. 1.658l for the 1.3) the optimal figure ?

1, the air box itself is air tight otherwise the engine would suck in dirt with the std filter
2, i have sealed the cold air pipe to the air box with silicone so no leak there
3, the filter now gets cold air direct from behind the headlight so untill i use bigger bore pipe it should be just as good as a k&n in the air box
4, when i use bigger bore pipe it should be better

the car now pulls better from low revs but i have not noticed any top end power gain, the noise is great, and my 2000 rpm flat spot is gone, what other mod could you do for £12.00 with that type of outcome?

ok sorry arnold so could u please tell me the modifications u made to your standed airbox pls alienfish and any pictures if possible please thanks

I'm not too sure but I expect it wouldn't make a difference if you have too much, just a waste of space in the bay I assume.

Right, im going to settle this once and for all.

Unless you have £££ and can buy a CAI off Matt then the next best solution is a K&n panel filter in the standard airbox. You now have two options

1) Refit the old air feed and buy/borrow another air feed and box from a scrappy. Cut the side off the spare box and make a airbox with two ports and fit both air feeds. Cut off and seal the silencers on the air feeds

2) Cut out port and some of the side from the box, install a bigger port and fit a bigger air feed. Preferably a flexible heat proof pipe or a metal pipe with silicon hoses and not a drain pipe.

I spent alot of time and money trying different styles of feeds and this is by far the best avaliable for a modified K11

airbox

well funnily enough my mate has drilled his airbox,, it gives the roar and it piks up quickly, wat do you think?

If it's cut infront of the filter by-passing it then it's sure to improve performance but destroy the engine. If it's cut the other side of the filter it's dragging in hot and dirty air I'd assume. Not 100% cos I'm a newb but logically :p.
