Brakes (and Oil)

Hi,

Micra 2009 (K12) around 100k miles.

Had MOT done in October, all fine except couple of advisories which I fixed.

Since then brakes have been making noises - but noise is on and off, not constant. Sometimes fine for days. I had the car examined at 4 different garages no less (2 independents, ATS, and Kwik Fit) - all said your brakes are fine. So I left it. Then, I booked it in for a full service at a nationwide chain this week - and I mentioned the brake noise, which has re-appeared over last few days.

Following the service inspection, they advised that nearside caliper needs cleaning (was seizing a bit) and it could be fixed for £100. I paid the extra, however noise is still coming and going. Given that 5 different places have now examined the brakes, should I assume they are good and stop getting it checked again?

Also, after the service the oil level on the dipstick seems high. I'm never quite sure how to read this dipstick, as you get different readings on the front and back side (the reverse side is showing oil at max, front side about an inch higher) Should I be concerned about this?

I don't really want to spend time and energy going back and forth with garage discussions, so seeking some advise here.

Thank you.

Have you checked the rear drum brakes, I have just serviced mine after various noises and had to remove with hydraulic press as shoes had worn into drum.Brake noises can be difficult to locate if the problem is intermittent so go through jacking each wheel up and checking for binding and squeakiness etc.
