what did you do to your micra today ?

I patched up a nasty rust hole in the back of my right sill. I did the quick and dirty version with some aluminium reinforcement and fibreglass filler. I know it's a ****ty way to fix it, especially since there was no way for me to actually remove all the rust, but if it holds up until spring I am happy. My sills are in pretty bad condition so welding would most likely require both sills to be replaced completely, costing me more than what I paid for the car.

Made it home again!!!! Best part of a 900 mile round trip and it didn't skip a beat. All without the maf plugged in too good car. Here's a picture I sent all the people doubting it when I arrived there. Excuse the chav attire it's a long drive and I wanted to be comfy

Off to a gearbox specialists in Rochdale for a fluid change for a reasonable rate :) drives fine currently, but the last history of the fluid being changed was about 18k miles ago and in 2011.

Collected the rebuilt engine and gearbox from Matt H, it looks great. It had better go great considering the bill that was attached....

Though it does have a LOT of new parts...

Polished and dowled crank
New crank bearings and big end bearings
New rings
Block has been honed and skimmed
8 new exhaust valves and guides (i bent the old ones when i once selected 1st instead of 3rd using one of those crappy quick-shifts....)
New valve springs
New timing chains
New timing chain tensioners
All gaskets replaced
All new coolant silicon hoses (when they all arrive)
Lightened flywheel matched to crank

Gearbox
Brand new 4.92 crownwheel and first motion shaft
All new bearings and LSD fitted to, standard 1.0 box

Got to bed it all in for 250miles, but before that I need to fit it all this weekend, and then hope it passes the MOT on Tuesday.... At least the drive to Essex for the MOT will help rack up the bedding mileage.

One thing to note, Matt H recommended using ATF fluid in the gearbox rather than EP oil. Luckily i bought a load of that this week so will give that a go.

Anyone need a Kidney.... i could with the cash....

...
The manual box on the Rover SD1 used ATF fluid , but that had an internal oil pump that pressure fed all of the gearbox bearings......

I think old gearboxes are less fussy than people think. I stick supermarket mineral engine oil in my track civic gearbox. Does just fine shifting at 8000 lol

I'm currently swapping the clutch cable today, well I was until I discovered that I've been sent the wrong one. I'm thinking it's off a lhd.

Retired it for the winter.

After a successful and very enlightening session on the dyno with Ed (Fusion Motorsport) last Thursday, we concluded that we've taken the current turbo engine as far as it will go.

Time to work on spec'ing up a new engine build :)

What did you make in the end can I ask

In terms of peak numbers, 200bhp@wheels but that's only part of the picture.

We spec'd up a hybrid turbo which bought in 10-15lb/ft pretty much across the entire rev range with significantly improved spool, transient response and negligible change in boost threshold. Turbos have moved on significantly since the Garrett GT series units.

Since this turbo will happily flow ~280bhp at up to 2bar, it's got plenty left in the tank.

Ah you'd be giving it much more drivability with that extra torque and spool time so, well good luck with it in the future

WDID (over the last week).

Collected the rebuilt engine and gearbox, and paid a large bill to Matt H, it looks great.

Fitted it all over the weekend / Monday morning, but came to start it and it doesn't really want to start. Got it running, but it won't idle, and then it dumps all its fresh new gearbox oil from the OS driveshaft seal all over our paved drive... Cue at a lot of swearing shouting, throwing and kicking things as I was rather tired and emotional at this point!

Majorly running out of time to get the car running, mobile and driven to the MOT station as the MOT is about to run out. So got Matt to come over, take the car away and sort out the last few niggles (hopefully they are just that) and get the car an MOT. Would have been ok but I can't work on the car for the next couple of weeks, so had to hand the car over to Matt. Probably makes sense he checks it all over after investing so much in the engine and gearbox.

BTW if you are wondering it takes a lot of work to remove ATF oil from paved stonework.....

try some cat litter matt,
Was too late by the time I spotted the leak, most of it has absorbed itself into the bricks... A lot of hosing down, water, and other solvents got most of it away. Hopefully will have some heavy rain soon which will finish the job off.

That chunk missing off of the crank pulley isn't going to help the crankshaft balance on a high revving engine.......

Hi all

WDIDT?

Changed the oil and after fitting the wheel forgot to remove the lock key from the wheel and drove 15 miles round trip. By the time I got home I realised the nut lock key is gone missing!!

What can done about it?

Regards

yeah , rock bottom sadly but things will pickup and then she will get some love, aswell as bikes and the pickup
and the insurance and keep well off her aswell (cause if out happens its almost always going to be a write off now)

Hi All,
After 4 years without a Micra I bought one yesterday. Had to charge the battery at night because it went flat while the car was on the A-frame with parking lights and hazard lights on (had no light board). Fitted the battery early morning so I was able to drive the car into the garage (have a slope in from to the garage so had to leave it on the street for the night).
Poor car a bit neglected and sold for spares. I hope won't need too much welding.

I see your engine has what looks to be a cast aluminium plate covering the side where the top timing chain/cams are. Most Micra's I have seen have had just a thin steel plate for a cover, and they seem to weep, pollyp had issues with his in the past. Is this plate you have an upgraded part for rallying/racing, or is it just something the later cars come with ?

It is one off the later coilpack engines, Matt H fitted it. He said they are stronger and lighter. Previously I had the steel one which was fine, and with a decent amount of instant gasket never leaked.

An update from Matt H, and the car now has a MOT and is now all up and running. Just need to get some miles on the engine to bed it in.

Thanks for the explanation, I like the ally cover better than the plain steel one ( looks more factory ) though I have to say, mine don't leak and they are both over 20yrold cars now, don't think the plates have ever been disturbed though.
I also notice you have a lightened flywheel, how do you find it ? I recently got one but likely won't fit it until the car needs the clutch replacing, the engine is otherwise standard cg1.3 dizzy with 195'000 kilometres ( the whole car seems to have been very well looked after/treated and feels really strong and new ) obviously as a race car you probably use quite a few revs most of the time, do you think a lightened flywheel would be beneficial in a car that will spend some of its time in traffic ( am I going to stall a lot at first haha )

I LOVE cleaning my car.
I'm a proper detailing freak, I probably spend more money on detailing than I do on modifications/service items.

I find it super relaxing, and it appeals to my super high attention to detail (No pun intended) :D My thread is up, however the pictures are broken... Linky

Got her soaked
Durhams is half flooded lol , she goes through water really well ,better then the k12 did
And serviced at 9k on the dot and replaced the original fuel filter and two new tyres arrived so soon the 3spokes will be back on andmi can get rid of the sport plus wheels which have crap tyres (just std And the slide all over)

Drove to a garden centre to do Christmas things with Lyra :D
