When I changed my brake pads a few years ago, ADL blue print ones without shims, I fitted them without copper slip. I've had no noise issues at all.
Is the practice of smearing everything in the stuff just a throwback in time to when it was the done thing, heck most local garages still liberally coat pads in the stuff.
Of interest was that a new set of ADL Blue print pads I've just bought are nothing like the first set I bought, different friction material, no groove or chamfers fitted with shims this time. Just goes to show that recommendations of certain parts can become meaningless or even just plain wrong.
I vote that it's a bad idea and waste of time.
