spyware? computer peeps!

computer really doing my head in tonight. Seem to having problems running it, was on a website earlier tongiht and the computer froze, turned it off, turned it back on and mcafee kept saying PUP found and delted them. Ran a full system scan, found some stuff and deleted it. Now the net is being really gay. Everytime i search for something on google and then go to click on it it takes me to stupid websites like godzila or summit, the format of google seems to have changd slightly too...anyone any ideaS? i downloaded the microsoft defender thing and searched but nothing found? any help appreciated
 
run a full anti virus scan, if you dont have one installed use this web-based one:

http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

try adaware, install it, update it and do a full scan.

if your computers still playing up confirm your home page is set right (control panel > internet options)

failing that its probably best to do a full re-format (as in re-install windows from scratch).


its always a pain when things like that get onto your pc :(
 
don't ise IE, try opera or firefox or something. Run adaware and spybot, plus the online housecall is a good one. Nothing beats a nice fresh format though :)
 
haha cheers people, ave downloaded that spybot thing and currently scanning me cputer, its already found about 15 things and one of them is called coolwwwsearch so that might be the root of me problems, have to hope and see - thanks for the help anyways
 
I use spyware doctor, you have to pay for it if you want it to remove anything, but it found things the other programs missed.
 
Spybot is not as good as it's cracked up to be, Spyware Doc is a lot better & with a bit of know how you can manually remove things the unregistered version finds. Best bet is to run 2 different ones as no spyware prog is 100% effective. :)
 
best approach is prevention.

use firefox, dont download files that you didnt specifally want to download, dont download/run email attachments that you were not expecting. When downloading content that may be considered illegal (i mean key generators for applications) - dont bother unless you got a lot of know-how becusae these days they're packed with spyware, and of course, stay off the porn ;) jks!

and i think most importantly when websites say "install this really cool toolbar it does everything like makes you a cuppa tea and gets the paper", dont bother! i even think the yahoo toolbar is bad news.
 
ok so that spybot thing didnt do the trick, downloaded spyware doctor and it found somrthing like 85 infections but then it was like £23 or summit to get them removed! any ideas, i also tried formatting my computer and read the instructions on my backup disc which said insert disc, turn off computer turn on computer and hold down C but nothing happened

lol is that all? last time i ran it on my sister's PC she had 72208 or something. but shes a retarded chav and shouldnt be allowed near a computer
 
little update: decided that i wasnt prepeared to pay £20 so decided to go through and manually delete all the files that spy doctor folund, mostly cookies and stupid favourties like porn, gambling,viagra etc... there was also one oin the system32 bit which i managed to source and destroy (very star wars) but theres quite a few which start like HKCR and i cant seem to suss how to delete them, anyone know how i go about doing this?|
