Since getty my car just over one year ago i always noticed the clutch feels great when the car is stone cold (left for a day), but when it warms up it feels like the clutch cable is catching in a really nasty fashion, you can feel it on depression and moreso on release (i thought this was just due to normal wear and tear as the cable aged). But its not the cable > as that broke recently and was replaced, but it's still feels like its catching and its got a little worse over the last 2mths, the clutch itself i think is pretty worn, as it dosn't grab on like other micra's i've driven do,

appreciate any help,

Alex

If you've worn out a cables, the thrust bearing, clutch fork pivot, pressure plate fingers, are all probably worn too. Theen theres the actual condition of the clutch plate, flywheel surface, pressure plate & pressure plate tension.

thanks aj, was thinking the part that the cable moves/actuates/pivots, or just inside there must be the sticky/catchy part, if it was something that was spinning, maybe a bearing is really flogged out in there, but it dosn't make any trade mark bearing noises when out of gear or in gear (i've heard that before in other cars > i think thats thrust bearing nosie). But gearbox does wine (spelling) a little when going high in revs in 1st/2nd, same straight-cut like wine as when in reverse but not as feirce/loud,

hope that makes it more specific,

Alex

soo whine in gears = bearing problems? theres no telltale noise when in nuetral. Stupid thing is, when i got the car the gearbox didn't whine, but when i had it serviced 6mths later i insisted tehy cahnged the gearbox oil. when i got it back it whined, so i went out and bought some nulon L90, drained 200ml out of the gearbox (when i opened the filler plug fresh oil slowly ran out, so it was filled properly with new oil) and put in the nulon in. That did a miniscule amount of difference, soo i left it at that. just remembered now > when its cold the first one/two changes into 2nd from first always makes nasty noise, then gets better as it warms up. agh, do gearbox specialists need to pull it out, or can they get 90% accurate with only my description and driving it themselves? i just know the labour is massive when dealing with pulling out gearboxes, rather try and find out whats wrong and fit the parts/whole new box myself,

bah, sounds like a whole load of stuff is buggered,

beginning to think the place that serviced the car put the wrong oil in?

You could always try dropping the gearbox off and changing the clutch, release bearing and greasing the shafts of the bearing and fork? You might get away with DIY'n it.

If its still bad after this then perhaps a recon gearbox is needed? No loss as you will have a new clutch etc already fitted.

Ok, sort this thing out one bite at a time. Just had a listen top the pedal noise on depression, now its making a slow creaking door sound on depression, i put my fingers on the lever which moves the fork and can feel the vibrations through it, this i when stone cold and the clutch still feels smooth, so i rackon when it warms up/or when i've given it allot of depressins there is a lack of lubrication on the lever assembly and the creaking get worse and becomes catchy like a worn out clutch cable, sounds about right?

Yeah it doesn't sound too bad, your gearbox should be running a oil like Castrol VMX80 or at least VMX75/85 that is what they recommend do you no what you had put into it? Also take your drain plug out and check for metal shavings if there is heaps then you could have some excessive wear in there. Good luck

thanks rocket, yep just found old invoice > Castrol VMX80 was used. I just remembered, I recently had my outer CV Boots replaced, and its probabaly since then that i've notice things a little more, could they have lost some oil when doing the CV Boots?

so here's the summary:

1. Whine from gears when in high revs, ie 1st 2nd 3rd (abit hard to get high revs in 4th and 5th without lawbreaking)
2. Gearstick has left-right play now, even when in gear you can still move teh stick lef-right. This has begun in last month or two. (return spring is okay)
3. Release mechanism makes creaking noise.
4. Awefull catching sensation through pedal when warm, like a catching clutch cable. evn when engine is off, but warm.

Think i'll check oil level/top up, and leave it until my 2ks holidays from uni (4wks away i think), can't be without car for now. If money allows, will get 190mm clutch and hopfully lightweight flywheel and sort out gearbox at same time, best to get it all done in one go and leave it for another 100'00kms i reckon, gearbox is the last thing you want to be pulling in and out several times that's for sure,

Cheers all,
if any other ideas come up let me know,

Alex

guys that errol is a champion, datrats all the way! definatly send some business his way, he just can't help being soo helpful, great guy.

were pretty sure whats wrong with it:

1. It sounds like countershaft bearings are needed and also a synchro set as well.
2. It could be the throwout bearing sticking on the input shaft spigot through corrosion.

so i'll post up how i go, but i won't be pulling off the box for 3wks yet, sort tou this noisy cv shaft while i;m in there too.

thanks a bunch for all your help.

may i suggest this howstuffworks page (there a bunch of stuf fon here, how a cvt works ect..), helped me allot to understand/figure out how a gearbox actually works :D

Well, after reading the recent post on gearbox oil i decided to do an oil change on the box.

Used Valvoline Synthetic GL4 75-85 gearbox oil (reason for purchase was its the only synthetic gearbox oil i could find in a hurry last night)
+ one tube of Nulon L70.

The result? no more whining from me and the gearbox :D i dunno what the shop put in there last year but ever since i got it back it just wasn't right. Hope too sort out the other issues when i get more out of debt, but for now she's all good,

Alex

Sorry to bump an old thread but this is what I'm experiencing. My clutch is about a year and a half old and I replaced the thrust bearing at the same time. Clutch feels smooth as when its cold but when its warm (after about half hour in peak traffic) she starts to feel sticky. The minute the car is off and still warm it feels smooth again.
what was the outcome of this?

Thanks nick, sourced a clutch cable from Nissan last week. Gets fitted tomorrow by the guy that did my clutch originally. Fingers crossed it fixes my problem. If it doesn't then I'm back to square one and at witts end!
