Putting full tank all the times... Is it or am i wasting alot of fuel?

Hi everyone,

I always put full tank when I get empty tank...

I tried to sort out mpg.

Before I do get about around 250-280miles.

Right now, I am getting about around 290-320. I have change alot cos I am driving like a old person and obey all these speed limits.

Anyway, I got bad tyres, bad service parts and need new braking system soon. I will change it soon so will I get more than 320 miles if I work out mpg nicely?

And

People told me that I should put half tank all the times.

What do you reckon guys? I got empty tank atm. It's 308 miles so far and it's not flash yet tho.


I need to top up tonight so shall I put half or full tank?

I only run half a tank too, unless I'm going on a journey and know I'll need more. Less weight = better fuel consumption. Be sure that your tyre pressures are good too as that can help with MPG even more :D
 
I always keep my tank full and top up once a week (about 18 quid a week). My mum lives nearly 300 miles away and I like to know I've got the juice to get to her if an emergency arises and I need to get there (she's poorly and accident prone).
 
I've always topped my tank up...no idea why...I guess it just means longer between trips to the pump?... :p

The only time I didn't top it up always was the first time I tried to put fuel in my old K10 Ls...the first day I had it
...I'd never put fuel in a car before...and It seemed like I couldn't work it properly 'cause it took ages! LOL
the fist time I put anything in her was to about £3.50...I just got bored waiting...took almost 10 minutes to get that much in it! ^_^

(79.9p L...those were the days, eh?)

You're a year older than me and I've never seen 79.9p a liter
 
Ok thanks for all advices guys. :)

I mean it's crappy tyres with 33 psi each around. I am going to get decent tyres soon.

By the way, I just check with Skynera's and others fuelly progress report. It's awesome progress though.

Right now, I think I will stick with only 15 litres from nowadays. I can compare and progress with 15Litres frequently. If its longer journey then obviously, I have to put full tank.

I could get better mpg if...

- I get decent tyres.
- I put new engine oil and service parts.
- I put new lambda plug.
- I get new braking system and re-geese on these brake calipers.
- I get wheel tracking and alignment to be done.
- I carry on my present driving style.

My dad and uncles used to own alot of petrol stations before so it was so cheap to use in that time.
Right now, it's increasing and decreasing all the times. Even up, down, up, still, down, up, up, still, down and more so on.
It's sooo crazy and drive us so mad!

I wish I could use cheap litre before. :(


Edit: Oh yea Jen, your is diesel Micra so that is ok if you put full tank. Even my mum does to her BMW.
 
My first car was a mini advantage 1.0, that was when you could still get 4 star and the most it ever cost me to fill was £12. Jeebus I'm old :-(

My dad's Dutton is basically a 1970's Ford Escort...it used to run on 4 star, then briefly that lead replacement they only sold in 2 stations within 3 miles of our house...
...but now must survive on un-leaded with a dash of lead replacement redex stuff every tank :p
...made it through another Mot in January...30 years old that heap of firbre glass, and some for the running gear ...no idea how LOL

once I figured it out I filled my K10 and K11 to the top too ...not just the dirty dci ^_^
 
Oh yea, Does anyone know how many litres in half tank? Please say something ASAP cos I am on the way to 129.9 per litre. :D

Ok, I will stick with 15litres ATM so I can work out with my mpg when I get 15l in every times.

15l = I should get over 150miles. I will sign up on fuelly tomorrow. :)
 
I managed to fill my Mildred today on 120.9 per litre ;) but she can only do about 280 miles to the tank I have heard rumors about something on the head gasket needing welding?

I always fill up the tank like Jay

good points:
-you dont waste time and fuel going to the station few times in a week
-you (almost) never worry if you have enought fuel and go where you want when you want

bad points:
-if your car get crashed or your tank sipped you lose a full tank of fuel, so more money wasted
-more weight so car can use a tiny bit more fuel

also I never wait to reach the fuel gauge red line (no worthy taking risk imho)

This is the same thing as the mobile phone battery meters, the more they are accurate (for example in %) the more you pay attention to them and the more you reckon it drains fast whereas actually it isn't.

Drive your car Jay, if you want good mileage run the most you can on highway, avoid brutal revings and brutal brakings, dont over pay attention to the fuel gauge or filling techniques/maths .
 
I do full tank everytime, know I only have to fill once a month then unless I make a big journey...

I don't go for all that extra weight stuff, the car is designed & tuned, to some degree, to be able to carry 4 people & luggage, I'm sure it can cope with 42kg of fuel (1L of liquid = approx 1kg)... I mean that's not even a whole person... Thats like a child!?...

I'm all for travelling as light as possible, but I'm also all for being prepared, which is the same reason I carry a toolkit in the car as well as a full tank of fuel. Best be safe than sorry...

On the PSI issue though, what's everyone running? I had new tyres put on last month, I've always gone by the book or the chart on the door pillar but the tyre guy set them all to 31/32. Said that was the best... & yes, he was a Micra driver too!

Want to see what PSI is best to prolong life of my tyres & improve fuel consumption... Have noticed my MPG getting steadily better, even with the odd heavy foot!

Ah, interesting... Be good to see what people's experiences have been with different PSIs. I've been wanting to experiment but thought I'd wait till I got new rubber... Now I've got it I'm all about maintaining MPG and tyre longevity so just wanna find optimum PSI really & just understand the differences gained/lost by changing them...
 
Watch the touring cars and see the small difference a bit of ballast makes. You'll be very hard pressed to notice the 20 kgs extra of a full tank.
 
Every time I fill up I 'fill up' till the pump clicks off. I do this because my closest petrol station which is small and expesive is 4 miles away, the next one is double that distance. By filling up at the 'work' end of my commute I can use one of the large supermarket chains and get cheaper fuel.

My K11 is a standard 1ltr with no mods and with four good tyres etc. I'm getting about 45-50mpg if I drive properly. By this I mean no booting it or heavy braking, changing gear at the right time and by having keen forward observation for any overtakes to keep the momentum smooth. You may see this as 'driving like an old person' which is OK because I am a old person. Also doing a minimum of 90 miles a day I have plenty of time to get it right.

The times I have put my foot down the very willing engine turns into a petrol guzzling monster for no real gain in the real world.
 
Mine seems to run better with a full tank... Just seems nippier & more responsive? One thing I have noticed though which is really frustrating is that it seems to take ages for the fuel gauge to come down from full to half way, think I normally average about 190 miles on that half & think great, I'm in for about 400miles off this tank, but then the fuel consumption just seems to go up in the last half of the tank & it lasts no time at all!? Why would that be? Can't be a faulty fuel gauge can it?
 
The fuel gauge isn't linear, mine does 160 miles on the first quarter, then around 80 miles for each remaining quarter.

Hmmm, strange... Never thought of it like that but it does make sense really doesn't it?

It's just strange how the human mind sees a gauge split into equal parts & so makes the assumption the measure of each is the same...

Thanks for that... Really got me thinking...
