I'm a beliver of "if you've nothing to hide then why hide" but then again if you have a sexual fetish, un-sociable but legal activities or when you're upset and need to be alone to cry/scream.

Like if an officer stops you on the street and says you match description of someone who shoplifted and they want to search you, it's your right to say no, but then you look like you have something to hide.

In city centres it's said you're on at least 1 camera all the time (I'm not picking my nose in Manchester again).

i agree with saying no to a police man in the middle of the street, they should take you to a secuded area then search you out of site of the public, depending on what the suspected crime is.

But an officer wouldn't because you match the description, in the world of suspision, if you suggested going somewhere quiet they may take it as you are the person and want to be arrested out of site or planning to attempt to run away.
It's far becoming guility until prooven innocent

one of the local television presenters did a test around newcastle to see if he was ever actually off a camera in the city centre. he wandered round for a full four hours, and was tracked every second of it.

Heh. Soon we're going to be photographed going to the loo. You know, so they can pick up on vandalism. hehe I wonder if I'll get done for writing my name. :D

I've been stopped and searched once, I was sixteen, The copper thought I was gonna try and nick a Nova. glad I was alone coz I don't think I could live with the embrassment of being accused of trying to nick a Nova!!!

ha ha ha!!!!
would you get a sticker saying "you have been Nova tacken"

Lol!!! :p

Err....................... I didn't know u were being tracked every minute while bein in town!!! Would be good if they did watch u in the loo, coz that means a big payout!!!!!!!!!!!!

But if councils proove they have the right to monitor the usage of their toilets for our safety and help prosecute vandals fighting it will be hard!
People in power will always want to monitor the people and property regardless of the invassion of privacy.

Take my mom for example, has she never heard of knocking when I'm not alone :D

Interestingly enough, there is no actual right to privacy in English law

Yeah there is, i remember askin to film some thieving git who i used to work with to catch him out, but was told i couldn't as it would be invasion of his privacy!!!

That's EU law, english law didn't have a privacy statement until the EU handed em down - hence a lot of newspapers were getting sued for publishing peoples names when they were involved with a crime until they argued that it was in the publics eye and interests.

EU law lacks direct effect due to the dualist nature of English law, right to home and family life (Art 8 ECHR IIRC) is the closest thing that we have, currently English courts use a modified form of breach of confidence, which is not the same thing at all.
If you are interested, do some research about Kaye v Robertson (yes, this is gordon kaye from 'Allo, 'Allo!) and Home Office v Wainwright.

I agree with what Craig is saying, we have no explicit legal right to privacy (probably because defining privacy is a pretty hard thing). There are however a lot of other laws that allow us to have a reasonable level of privacy.

In an ideal world, total surveillance wouldn't be a problem. The data would be there, but unless there was cause to access it, you would maintain privacy. But the world isn't perfect and it is very likely that the data would get out at some point. That's the problem with the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument.

Correct, Orwell was right. And the powers that be have total surveillance over us, we can be tracked down to within a couple of meters on satelite via our mobiles, the only thing left to go is mind control.
Ill give that until 2010.

It shouldnt really bother any of you unless you're doing something illegal anyway...

Security cameras in elevators havent stopped me from scratching myself or picking my nose when there's noone else in there. :p

I don't really mind being on camera, if someones taking pee out of me doing something on camera so what but it's when cameras start appearing in housing areas, thats bound to be next step to stop anti-social behaviour and slap asbo's on 4 years for excaping mommy and an old person for walking to slow
