Please help gearbox oil topup guide

Hi all

My first post.

Problem, changed the oil on my friends micra today but mistakenly drained the gearbox oil (common mistake I hear). I closed the plug after I noticed it was too clean so there is some oil in there but probably drained 1.5-2litres out. Micra is a Passion R Reg. 1.0 Litre.

Now Ive been looking at forums/guides and there is two options;

  1. One is a filler hole (which I cant find)
  2. The other is through the speedo hole.

Speedo Hole Method
Before I go and mess things up, I was wondering if anyone has an actually photo of the speedo hole and the parts

I found the following on another thread;

-park on flat floor
-remove airbox to access the speedo gear
-unscrew the speedo cable from the speedo pinion unit
-remove 10mm bolt holding speedo unit onto gearbox
-rotate the speedo unit anticlock till you can grab the lip then pull up & turn

-stick a rod down the hole to measure the level

haynes says the RS5F41A 1.0L box should be 28-38mm high while others should be 45-54mm high. I just fill it till the speedo pinions fully submerged when inserted. bout 3-3.5L

My question is if someone can provide a diagram/phot of the following parts;

  • Speedo Pinion unit
  • Speedo cable connected to prinion unit
  • The 10mm bolts connected to the gearbox
  • speedo unit

An actual pictures/series of pictures/diagrams showing where the filler hole is meant to be in relation to the drain plug. ( I cant find it!!!)

I would be grateful for any help tonight or tomorrow morning as my friend was intending to travel tomorrow night.
 
just find the rigid speedo cable limboy, then follow it vertically downwards to the speedo drive in the top of the g/box
 
^speedo cable goes down into the speedo pinion unit at the very back top of the gearbox. remove the airbox for a clear view & access.

on a 1.3 box i found you can use the oil dipstick to measure the gear oil. dunno bout the 1l boxes

Thanks Frank and Pollyp for your quick responses.

I am going get a photo of a micra engine and describe what I plan to do tomorrow morning. Hopefully both of you guys will be online over the next 10-15 mins so that you can confirm my approach.

SO here is the picture and my questions

1. What is the pipe that I have marked in purple
2. Is the cable and the end of it the speedo cable (or throttle cable) - marked in red
3. Do I need to take this pipe of that is connected to the airbox - marked in lime green
4. Do I need to take these pipes of - marked in blue
 
Once I have removed the above

I am assumming I should see something speedo unit (which is the first diagram in the the first post?)


Where the circle hole is, I am assumming the is a bolt here that I take off and then turn anti clockwise and then just pull?

Once I have done this I just pour the oil down the hole?
 
One in red is throttle cable, lime green is rocker breather hose removal makes it easier to get airbox off, blue is virtually above where the speedo cable enters the 'box, look down the back there and there should be a cable going vertically into the box

Go to your car tomorrow and get on with it, if you get stuck come on here.

No worries, havent a clue bout the purple one youve marked, looks either power steering pipe, or air con, which both of mine dont have, i could be wrong so one of the others is hopefully going to tell you what that one is!
 
1. thats the PAS pipe
2. thats the throttle cable connects the accelerator to the throttle body
3. get to that in abit
4. to get the airbox off, yes you need to disconnect the air inlet

right, to access the speedo unit:
*untie & disconnect the inlet snorkel pipe off the airbox (u marked blue)
*unbolt the airbox from a securing bracket just below the airbox inlet
*loosen the jubilee clamp under the airbox that holds it into the throttle body
*hold the front/rear of airbox and rock & pull up till it pops off the TB
*whilst clamping the breather clip fingers with pliers to loosen em, pull the breather pipe & airbox off the rocker cover (next to where u marked yellow)

with the airbox off look down the back of the gearbox to uncouple the speedo cable and unbolt the speedo unit off the gearbox

Good point, now I think about it, I had a coilpack 1.4 and you may well be right. If this is the case, it'll probably be easier to top up because there'll be a dedicated filler.

Hi Pollyp

Thanks for the picture and your guide. What year is your car?
 
chassis is 1994 but mechanically & electronically early 1998.
speedo was prob mechanical from 93 to 98 and then mid 98 was when micras began to transition towards the facelifts & electronic speedos etc

the electronic speedo unit will clearly been seen as a black plastic looking top with a wire plugged into it.
 
Thanks for your response. I see what you mean now. I think it may have a mechanical speedo so will check. (not worked with a micra before hence the silly questions!)
 
So the picture above isn't your car then?
It is "normal" mechanical speed.
Just undo the speedo with pliers to the left and pull it out, then undo the 10mm bolt, get flat head driver and twist the lot to the left as posted in your first post. Then try to lift it, again easier with flat head.
 
Thanks, yes the latest picture is from my friends car(its not my car im working on). I take it i have to pull the thing off and the hole becomes bigger.
