what manufacturers need to do to cut costs and sell cars is to stop fannying about with leather, chrome, folding this that and the other, traction control, stability control, auto lights, auto wipers, heated seats, massage whatever, sat nav, dvd players and everything else you just dont need...
make them an optional extra and chuck the cars out at silly low prices.. Bingo. cheap to make, cheap to sell (so they will) and people allways want "extras"

what all manufacturers are doing is shoving every piece of technology into a car at great expense and then expecting the general public to buy the cars? we just cant afford them. so we dont buy them and the car companys believe that their cars arent desireable enough for people to buy........ are they insane? people bought the old ford granada and the daewoo lanos for crying out loud! they will buy anything, if the price is right.

take a Ford mondeo. £26,600 for an estate mondeo., (average wage £15,000, so twice the national average wage)

Ford sierra estate from 1989? list price when new £10,999 (average wage £8500, so just over a years wages)

thats partly due to the rubish amount of money people get now compared to the out goings... but i digress.
