physics dilema

So just been to see the movie crank which sparked off a convo about falling out of a plane. Basically, if you were free falling and you had someone about 3 times your mass falling with you. Would it be possible to jump off them to stop yourself from dying? I said no, its impossible your body can't produce enough upward force to take off any speed from the free fall, and also you will push the other mass downward making the jump even less effictive. But a friend of mine said it was possible. Whats your view on this?

they did somthing like that in the Boure Supremacy, but he only fell down the equivelent of a hotel building where he landed on the other guy and he got straight back up, doubt its possible thought.

Crank tho, was a pretty good film!

ok ian sorry :p

i tend to agree with you but after the last physics fiasco (Plane>conveyor) i cba to argue lol

the jumping off bit is what i cant see happening, as in gettin enough lift but i'll reserve answer for after i see the movie...

btw good movie????

Would you survive? Naaaahhh....
Considering the terminal velocity of a human is what, 120mph? The couple of MPH you managed to take off by pushing off someone else aint gonna make much (if any) difference. As you say, the fact that the other person is falling will make the jump even less effective.

how weird, just as i was reading this post the scene happened on tv.

people have sky dived and fallen and the bottom person took the main impact and the person above survived. Jumping will have no effect, but the larger person may have slightly more air resistance and slow you down!!!!

Well lets start at the basics. Who in the their mind would jump from a plane? Sheesh! :p

I cant begin to imagine how it must feel when your parachute doesnt open. You know you're about to die, so what do you do?

Must be a terrible feeling.

I hate these arguments, if you're both falling at 50mph for example and you jump of him you're still falling 50mph, dount you would be able to jump anyway.

Your mate has been watching too much wylee coyote!

yeah I saw it in the tele listings earlier, I forgot it was in the first one, I thought it was the 2nd one

Well it'd be nearer 120mph as stated wouldn't it? but no, by jumping you would be hoping that they have reached their terminal velocity and the force you exert on them doesn't speed them (equal and opposite reaction etc...) up much so that there is more force for your 'jump' which would probably reduce your fall only by 2 or 3mph.

In my opinion, your best bet would be to try and induce some kind of directional flight so that at least some of your mass is moving perpendicular to the traditional falling direction (down). But it still probably wouldn't help much.

I should imagine someone out there has done a thesis on this.

I have a higher in physics... you need to see this drawing I'm making in paint... genius! I'll get it done after work as it's consuming work time.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

Good good, It's been ages since I've got my head round physics tbh but I used to love it at college (at least 5 years ago now). So I might be a bit off the mark with my hypothesis.

no if you're falling at 100mph, and jumped upwards at 10mph you're still travelling down at 90mph.
Basically... you've got it in one ;)

This was kind of done on mythbusters - the old, jump in a falling elevator thing. They figured out you were safer lying on the floor than jumping.

People have fallen from incredibly high heights and survived, but usually they've hit the branches of a tree, which slowed em down enough to survive, but broken a lot of limbs. So i'd say, ya, you could survive the fall if you had the devils own luck, but forget about getting up and walking away :D
