Mounting subs upside down?

What's the benefit? I keep on seeing installs where the subs are mounted facing either down or towards the car body some way. Is it better than mounting them up? Do you get a different sound?

you get a deeper bass tone as the volume of the box is increased by removing the sub from inside. you also swap the voice coils over, possitive to neg and vice versa

No 'real' benefit as you'd lose the volume either way (as the sub then just sticks outside of the box = lost space). On many subs the motor sound is also excessive, so it can end up sounding worse.
