Ok, so how do you go about doing one of these before you buy a car privatly, just to make sure? and how much of the queens green stuff does it cost?
A HPI check will need the car's chasis number, number plate, possibly mileage and colour. Most big companies offer HPI check's Halfords, AA, RAC, etc for around £35 to £40 but there are some smaller companies that offer cheaper checks. Just read the online form and make sure that you get a check done that includes a financial check as well.

eg CHECK M939TGM - send 88600
quick and easy, tells you if cars been stolen, written off, imported, when it was registered and how many owners its had.
try it on your own car for proof, it does work, think it costs like 80p or something!!
