hidden power

Any thoughts on this. Since I had this little terror, for over a year or more now, I'm continually, and still amazed at the poke this car has. When I drove it home from Torquay the day I bought it, I have been convinced this is not standard performance. The next day I took it to my fitters to see if it was turbo-d, nope he said, well that surprised me as this pulls and pulls, torquey as hell.
Driving home from footy tonight, I pulled out into the outside lane of the bypass, and booted past a line of cars like they were parked, had one in my slipstream, left for dead, and never even kicked it to the floor or red lined it, then ran out of road and back to normal mode.
So, my question is, what could the kids who had this before me have done to produce this performance, I know it does not have a turbo - so ?????
For those who don't know - its a 1.4 facelift 2002.

smaller ratio gear box,,,,or tune to perfection,,,,,,,or your used to the pedal power,,,,,,,,or you had a dream you mistook for reality,,,,or you big'ing up your k11 a little too much or not enough :)

This thing is quick, and I've had a few quick motors. Re-mapped perhaps ???

I'll be gobsmacked if this is standard performance. I had a 1.4 Escort a few years ago, it didn't go like this, I know it was bigger - but.

To be fair I said the same thing to Andy on Saturday. Simply shocked at how well his 1.3 went, and apparently it's standard.

i driven a 1.4 over a 1.3 and did feel a difference, my plans originally were to get a 1.4 block fit my 1.0L pistons and slap on a preface cylinder head and anjoy but didnt get around to it..... good idea is to get brake cleaner and spray the throttlebody, maf sensor, i occsionally do that and i feel a little more kick to the car.....another thing i did also one time was i fitted another distirbutor and the performance was better.. so could be a factor of things!!! you have a coilpack, might have an intermittant drop in spark causing less performance, spark plugs built carbon etc....

but enjoy!!

Ok, so in the 1.4 block what kind of pistons would it have,c aved or domed top? also would the 1.4 pistons be the best that can be for high comp?

J
no comprende J  1.4 pistons are dished (2nd from left)

Interesting alpina, when you say you changed the distributor, do you mean a different one, or, a new one the same ?? Should I perhaps put a new dizzy cap on with new leads ????
Also, when I first had this motor, I had a full service done, which included new plugs That was 11,000 miles ago - maybe time to look at them ??? What are the best plugs for these girls ???
I also notice from all the piccies that many on here use blue leads, and the difference is ????

You have coilpacks so no dizzies, and the blue leads lead from the dizzy to the spark plugs... So no use either to you.
Please someone correct me if I'm wrong

the 1.4 has a bigger bore tho mate (72mm)

Ahhhh, ok makes sence!!! sweet frank!!!

cheers !!!!

You have the Coilpack so this here wont be any use to your car but good for info.. only for preface lift K11, The distributor i used was a spare from my old engine i had and when i swapped it over i noticed the engine was more responsive, Yes you have to use the same type, as far as i know there isnt any other that can fit! a new one would be good to fit only if you need one etc! check the cap see any carbon spark build up and scrape off with screwdriver, also over the years the spark leads break down thus can lose power, blue leads are more likely to be performance leads, thicker core = stronger spark = more power but not really that noticeble just better starting quicker pickup thru the rev range etc... only good if you have done other mods to the car, i.e. full sports exhaust, induction kit or even turbo, just helps the engine to run optimum... still good to buy if being standard cos its engine dress aswell, looks good when you lift up the bonnet!!

For these little slappers we drive, cant blooy remember the spark plugs, i onece had Bosch Super 4, and they were totaly 5hit, just didnt run right, idling was rough so i went and purchase standard plugs after 2 days so i have a set in my toolbox all boxed up, i should have taken them back!!!!! bit late now!!!

That's interesting ;) Mate of mine could not receive a Sky signal when he moved into his new house, down in a wooded valley. Called in a TV fella who changed his co-axial to a thicker cable, and hey presto - perfect picture. Same principle there, cheers for that, I'll have a look at all of it.

Are you sure you haven't got an aftermarket manifold? eg a Janspeed or equivalent and a look inside your airbox might explain your little pocket rocket. Otherwise maybe you just got a goodun! I've known 1.3 micras having 92hp standard on whats supposed to be a 75bhp motor so it doesn't surprise me a 1.4 goes well, a 4.2.1 manifold and air can add 20+ onto that but you should notice 4 big pipes coming down the front of your block.

The 1.4 is a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing tbh, mine was reasonably quick when i got mine, but stick some breathing mods on it and it goes like the clappers. The only thing is that all my power is right up at the top of the rev range, but thats where i like it. I also think our G/B has longer ratio's, but that may be only 4th and 5th, i am sure i will be put right on that tho.

The 1.4 is 85bhp in a light car it's gonna be quick! My 1.3 has shown 1.6 Zetec S' and Civic Coupes who is boss! Such revvy engines!

My motor was owned before myself by some modders, I assume this because its been lowered (logical conclusion) Its also been crashed :( and repaired :). I make another assumption they did something to the engine as well. I would not know what I'm looking at, but I'll have a look sometime.
In 2cnd and 3rd it just pulls forever, in 4th/5th I don't like to go over 80/85 as I think I may damage such a small engine.

You won't damage it (shouldn't damage it if it's healthy at least) unless you sit at high revs for ages :)

alright dave i mean rodders ermm shhhh what do i mean ?,,,,,,oh yeh check to see if you can hold revs under 2000-1500 rpm the reason being i had a ecu that shot the revs up imediatly to 2000 rpm. was a fault as me and pollyp stuck his diagnostic in and it showed up the fault/mod.
changed ecu and loom solved this for me as it was wrecking the rubber mounts But the car was very rapid like that just couldnt cruise under 2000rpm.(maybe it was a faulty idle valve but i doubt it as pollyp tested it too) probly p :)

Rodders, bloody rodders:eek: I am a bit when it comes to motors I suppose;) Never worked on one, or modded one or anything really, just stuck it in a garage and paid the bill. I understand the principal of the internal combustion engine etc,but this is a whole new world to me, and luvvin it. To me though, if I wanted monster performance, I would just buy a monster car ???

I've caught up on this. Its an entertaining read in places

Though when you say it was owned by modders because its lowered. Its unlikely to have seen any decent modification (no offence lowered people you lot on here have a an in double figures)

Sounds lije you're just new to the light car/well built engine game :)

I could go with that H, makes sense. I've had monster engines, with monsters bodies, still humped though.
These however are a different bracket, touch the throttle and the response is instant, I would put this car against many of the monsters I've owned, up to 60/70mph, it would not be left behind. Around town, it would leave em for dead.

Well, I had a good mooch in and around the engine bay, nothing looking untoward there that could give it the hump.
I'm going with a standard car, with a **** hot, well built engine, with extended ratio gearbox in a lightweight shell.
Thanks for all the input, problem solved :D

i must say that im quite happy with the poke from my 1.4 coil pack motor 80 somthing brake in a 7-800 kilo car = fun times, quite suprised with its motorway manners aswell! stick it in top and it'll happily chug from 50 up to 120 (clock speed) without any fuss! the induction kit seems to have ironed out any flat spots and it sounds really sweet when you turn the wick up! no noisy exhausts needed!!!

Yo - the 1.4 coil pack rocks (youngster speak) :D
