Hi All

Regarding the wifes Micra Muzic 1.0 Manual 1996 or 1997 on a P Plate.

About 2 months ago there was a whirring sound that sounded in relation to the rotation of the wheels ...... I couldn't see anything wrong - upon jacking up and spinning wheels no noise was heard, but, a grating noise heard from the gearbox sump area (I reckoned this would go on for years without issue so ignored it). Oil was plentiful.

A few weeks ago it was very difficult getting into 1st gear - pretty much impossible actually, I was going to look at the gear linkage ...... all other gears were as smooth as ever.

Anyway, Xmas Eve she was travelling home and it started making a loud grinding noise apparently and then all drive was lost.

I reached her as the breakdown truck arrived and it will go into gear and move forward and backwards but makes a grinding noise ....... out of gear she moves silently.

You lot could probably tell me straight away whats up - anyone help??

If it is the gearbox - is it easy to remove and fix up? Is it better to buy a recon unit for about £175? Should I do the clutch at the same time? Is it better to leave it all to the clutch people?

Any help gratefully received ................................. thanks in anticipation

Not sure what could have got into the box?

Is it a tricky job to replace the box? I know a bit about cars in general - I service my Subaru Impreza Turbo and MX5 myself .... but I am getting a bit old for heavy stuff like gearboxes!

Has any member on here got a 1996 1.0Litre Gearbox lying around doing nothing? The wifes car has only done about 50,000miles - which is a bit worrying!

Thanks all ..... looking in the Haynes Manual there were 2 gearboxes fitted to a 1.0litre?

Was it 1998 that they changed? Obviously I don't want to get the wrong one.

Anything I need to watch out for? Any pitfalls? The worst I can see is that the replacement gearbox is also crap! :( Not sure about warrantys from Scrappies!

Tough job? Special tools required? Or straightforward with a socket set?

Worth doing the clutch at the same time? Get a clutch fitted a at kwik clutch centre, maybe, and get them to put the replacement gearbox on instead of the old one? I guess they would need to remove the box to get to the clutch? So, no extra work to pay for?

What about the job?

Difficult? Special tools?

Just been out to the car, the release bearing is noisy ...... it slots into gear very freely - clutch bites at the usual point, but the car seems to have the brakes locked on somehow???? Weird?

Then its hard to get it out of gear again ........ ??

Why I mention the clutch is, for the sake of £35 isn't it worth a new clutch?

What is the car worth as it stands do you reckon? Very Low Mileage, MOT, in good condition apart from this fault ............ any ideas? Might just get another and pass this onto someone who wants to put some work in and make some money?

This is what parkers have to say for the same spec as your micra but with 90,000 miles

Nissan Micra (93-02)
1.0 Muzic 3d 1997/P
Average mileage 90,000 miles
Original Price £7,030
Independent Dealer £645
Private Good £550
Private Poor £310
Part Exchange £440

Yeah, I know what Parkers says ...... it's at odds with the AutoTrader though which has 3 on at the moment for over £1000 each.

Parkers drift badly out when it comes to the older car, I find.

at 50k you might aswell get the clutch replaced as thats the best and easiest way but make sure that the gearbox going in is ok, try to get a benchtested gearbox with some kind of warranty on it

Got one laying around in my garage as I've recently gone from a 1.0 to a 1.3. I'm in Kent

Is it a good one, no faults?

Is it the correct year?

The biggest concern I have about one from a breakers yard is getting a shagged unit!

I've just been quoted £40 by Halfrauds for a Clutch Kit - does that seem about right to you??

Can anyone tell me which Gerabox I have? The RS5F41A or the RS5F30A?

I know they changed in March 1998 and it seems important that I get the right one for ease of swapping - or is the swap easy as long as you get the speedo stuff too?

Been quoted for an LUK Clutch is LUK a good clutch?

Where is the best place to source a good Box?

if you live near kent you could do a lot worse than talk to ollie he seems a sound bloke and im sure he wouldnt have keept it if it was crap! otherwise go for a re-con cuz scrap yard boxes are a lottery at best. oh and my k11 came with history of a re-con box fitted at 40k !!! so they do fail

Indeed - I have been waiting for Ollie to come back on the thread. I didn't - for one moment - mean to suggest the box he has isn't good .... I meant scrappie boxes in general.

I live in Hampshire - but couriers are cheap and I visit the South Coast (EastBourne area) now and again ... thats not far from Kent.

Tried to see if there are any pm's on this site - but there seems no way of getting hold of other posters? Or am I missing something?

I see a difference between a secondhand unit (very risky unless you have seen it and driven it in the car) and a Re-Con unit ..... the Scrappie Box is about £60 - the rebuilt box is £500 .........................

I would want the rebuilt box to be as good as new!

Another way out is to remove box from car, if I cannot see anything obvious, then take it to a transmission specialist and ask them? Could only be a bearing? Fix it up and you should have a decent box again?

The ability to PM is only available for official members.

Yes the LUK clutch will be fine - quality is always consistant with the LUK's.

As for removing the gearbox and replacing the clutch - easy if you have a brain and don't follow the haynes (it is evil :p). The gearbox itself is pretty darn lightweight, shouldn't pose a problem to any non-geeky guy. Still it would be an idea to have plenty of cold beer and another mate around to help - there are some things which require more than 2 hands.

Cheers Yom - I am 20 stone and built like a gorilla, so maybe I will be ok with the alloy cased box?

Ollie seems to have disappeared since he mention his box?

So? taking the old box off is easier than the Haynes manual says? I am guessing that the driveshafts don't have to be removed from the wheels, just pulled from the gearbox?

What about exhaust? does that need to come off? No big deal really - just a pain on rusted up bolts.

Clutch should be simple will box out of the way, yes? An LUK Clutch is £32 at my local factors .. seems ok?

Are there any links to a step-by-step guide to gearbox removal?

The haynes guide is exactly that, a guide. As you're in there you may notice some easier ways to do things.

Yes you'll have to drop the oil from the gearbox and remove the driveshafts from the car completely (undo hub nuts). Not overly hard at all.

About the hardest part will be levering the gearbox off the locator dowels on the engine block. Mine were rusted in and it took lots of levering and shaking to remove.

I thought I could loosen off the suspension/undo trackrod end and simply pull the driveshafts out of the box? Thats what I was told?

Any down-to-earth guide on the net?

i had a one litre gearbox with a brand new clutch just sittin on my front drive for 2years, i ended up paying £5 to a local removal guy to take it away!!

if you had posted in wanted section i would have defiently have seen your post!!!

Thats right, make me feel better!!

I think I have found a local lad who has a 2nd hand one and he will fit it for me.

I was looking at how much these cars are being advertised for and it seems the wifes car is worth about £1200 ..... at Xmas I thought it was only worth about £800?? Are they really making good money?

Have you just tried changing the clutch? also if you do decide to replace the gear box, replace the clutch as well - you might as well as you have to take the gear box off anyway when your changing it over.

It's a funny thing .... a Nissan trained mechanic has had a look (not in detail just started the car engaged gear and drove it a few yards).

He thinks it is engaging 2 gears at the same time - infact, he is convinced that it is. It then jumps out of gear completely.

Could there be something up with the gear selection linkage or something? I'm looking to you lot as a group who know these cars inside out.
