fuel gauge

i`ve got a 98 si with the blue instruments panel and recently my fuel gauge has been sticking sometimes.i have been able to get it to work by banging the cover,but recently i`ve had to bang it more and more so i`m wondering if anyone has had the same problem and knows how to cure it......any help? thanks,ed

you will need to find out if its the gauge or the sender unit thats at fault... been a very long time since i did this but i think you need to earth out the live sender wire to see if the gauge works as it should,if it doesnt could be the sender unit at fault or the wiring from sender to gauge.

thanks andy....i`ve got a feeling it`s the connection to the gauge that might need a clean up because it works ok for a week or to when i give the dash a wallop....it`s just that i have to hit it harder now to get the needle to start to register
