Embarrassing fail...pulled driveshaft out on N/S

Was wrestling a strut back into place, only to look down and find gearbox oil gushing all over the floor :-(

So...
1) How do I get it back in? It's not hanging loose - do I just whack the hub nut end with a mallet a few times? I'd rather not take off CV joints etc. etc.
2) How much oil will it take, and where does the box fill from?

It was all going so well...
 
...any tips on pulling the speedo drive?

I can get half a turn on it pretty easy left to right, but pulling up on it makes no difference. I've even threaded a cable tie through the bolt hole and given it a good yank but no dice. been going at it for about 90 minutes now!

The square drain hole on the front of the box is rusted to hell and too big for a 1/2 ratchet, too small for a 3/8
