I've only seen dogleg boxes in RWD cars. They're mainly found in cars built around 1980.
It's a 5 speed box with reverse located above 1st, 2nd above 3rd & 4th above 5th.
It makes for a convenient change from 5th back to 4th when crusing on the open road.
When driving off road & stuck in mud, sand etc. the change from 1st to reverse is easy, enabling you to quickly get the car rocking & drive out.
Notable cars that had dogleg boxes are:
Nissan Silvia with FJ20
Vauxhall Chevette 2.3L (5th gear was 1:1)
Mercedes, the small car made around 1985, specifically the model with the cosworth head

Thankyou, so its just the selection process that is different. I thought they might off given quicker acceleration or that they have streight cut gears/cogs for a faster change between gears.

ur thinkin of a "dog box" this is where straight cut gears are used instead of slant cut gears. this basically makes the gears stronger, and the way they are made means u can change gear without the clutch although this isnt advisable unless u plan on rebuilding the gearbox ever 100 miles. they are mostly used for race/demo cars and not really designed for everyday use. they also whine like a bitch, do you know the sounds your car makes when its in reverse, that whining is because the gear is straight cut. so u can imagine what that would be like in evergear, day in day out and on the motorway etc
