Checking timing chain for stretch k12

I have a k12 micra with running issues ,stalling etc cam sensor fault code..
How do i check?
do i need to remove camcover?
looking to check tensioner potrusion..
also theres a soleniod type thing on the cam cover ?does this need to be removed first before cam cover is removed..

once the cam cover is removed the top of the chain is exposed, you'll be able to test for looseness by applying light pressure with a screwdriver
 
With the rocker cover off, undo and remove the upper side cover. BE CAREFUL AS TWO OF THE 10MM BOLTS ARE INSIDE AND IF YOU DROP THEM INSIDE THE ENGINE YOU WILL HAVE TO STRIP IT DOWN TO GET THEM. With that cover off, you will be able to see the timing tensioner piston. If its more than around 7mm out then your chain is stretched. Mine was +20mm You can see it just above the 10mm bolt head

Rocker cover has a gasket which you can re-use but clean it throughly aswell as the were it sits on the head/rocker cover. The side cover is the usual RTV sealant
