MicraMachinePower...
hi all,

was wonderig if the 988cc engine in my super is any different to a 988cc engine is the other k10s? Only asking as i wish to get my hands on another engine to rebuild, and if they are different, ill take out the super engine to rebuild and put a tempary one in.

Anyone know?

Cheers,
Sam

the 4 speed and five speed differ, the 5 speed has a different head. the 4 speed is 50bhp where as the 5 is 55bhp. dont know whether yours is a 4 or 5 speed but should bare that in mind

Ah right, so there are 5 speed 988cc then? Would one of them work fine with my 4 speed box? As in an engine that had a 5 speed box. Just incase its all i can find!

Cheers,
Sam

Woooaaahhhhh!!

I didnt know this.....

so is it corect that there are 4 different MA heads?

1. 1 litre (988cc) 4 speed head
2. 1 litre (988cc) 5 speed head
3. 1.2 litre head
4. ST head

I thought the 5 speed was a differernt engine altogether (1.2 l)

I dont think that's true. Some MA10's had different compression i believe, giving them that extra 5bhp. Not all 5 speed MA10's are 55bhp!

the haynes states

Engine - 1.0 models

Models with four speed manual transmission - 50bhp (37kw) @6000 rev
All other models - 55bhp (41kw) @6000 rev

now to me that means that all ma10 five speeds are 55bhp?

also it states that compression ratios

Models with four speed manual transmission - 9.5:1
All other models - 10.3:1

correct me if im wrong but would that not meen that the head off a five speed would achieve a greater compression ratio, and seeing as about 10.5:1 is a good compression for the ma10 slightly more power? unless this greater compression is achieved from elswhere? i just always assumed that it was a slight difference in the head?

i'm not firmiliar enough with the engine internals to say for sure, i just always assumed that it was the head, didnt think about the pistons, its more likely to be that then if thats the method they used for the k11

there are also at least 2 maybe 3 ma12 heads i believe

It sounds like a comprehensive list of compatible heads would be usefull for us all...

so far it sounds like about five unique but compatible heds exist to chose from??

Im picturing a small spreadsheet with the heads listed and the unique features of each head against each....

...

the super s head, ie the ecc system head, iirc had bigger valves or ports or summat, cant be sure tho, we need bob or speedle ere to help us discover whats out there.

if you take your thermostat housing off, theres a number there, i think that relates to the head type?
