forgot to mention undo clutch cable enough for clutch pedal to fall to the floor. you will have to push pedal down manually. then tighten clutch cable nut until gears engage well enough

you could loosen the clutch cable adjustment nut so biting point is lower on the pedal having to depress clutch pedal less helps

cleaning the brake pad carrier clips and where the clips sit on calipers clear of build up and rust should help. apply appropriate lubricant to pads where they sit in the clips also. drimel type tool with wire brush attachment speeds things up with the cleaning
