Don't worry about a bleed screw, just drill a little hole in it! Cavitation is when the pump is spinning too fast and the low pressure area created caused 'bubbles' to form. If you have A Bell's tuning book (everyone should have this BTW...) then it goes into it in a little details IIRC...

I've seen discussion on this on a different subject and some people say that the slight restriction that the thermostat provides aids with keeping the coolant pressure up/slowing the flow down so that it can asorb more heat. Wherther or not that is true is debateable, but it does seem logical...
