I usually find this is the best way. I had the same thing happen on my Mk1 Focus. I just hammered a screwdriver in and turned it from there :D Sometimes violence IS the answer.

Nice score. I always found it interesting to go from a non rev counter to a rev counter, and match what I knew as the sound of the engine to the actual revs!

As above GA16 from a Primera is also a good option! I ran one on my facelift a few years ago.
