Start problems with automatic gear stick - in K12 Micra

I've been having problems starting the car as I need to jiggle the auto gear stick
If I don't do this then the ignition key turns, but nothing happens.
Lately its been getting worse.
Sometimes the car does not start at all, and I have to keep jiggling the gear stick, while in Park, then it will start the start motor.

Any clues on how to fix this?
