sooty engine

hey
i was inspecting me engine and noticed it's fairly sooty from the intake manifolds, pistons and all the spark plugs. (it's 8yrs old)

sometimes from cold starts i noticed it misfires initially when i hold the rev for few secs (like as though 1 cylinder is skippin) but runs ok after warming up.

i suspect it's running too rich so i cleaned up the Throttle Body, O2 sensor & plugs, ran the engine afew minutes, then re-check the plugs and they have a light layer of black soot. also noticed after overhaulin the TB, from all the crusty dirt, that it idles a little faster (1100rpm min) than before (500-600rpm)

anyone know what could be causing it?

i'm thinkin its might be:
-worn plugs? not sparking proply so unburnt residue builds up
-worn O2 sensor telling injectors to run rich?

a ha
after googling, I'm certain all the symptoms I described here points to a faulty oxygen sensor (cold start hesitation cos sensor's cold & very rich sooty mixture cos it's prob not sending any voltage back to the ECU)
could the sensor be tested to verify this?

local parts shop quoted a new sensor at £48. better to replace that, than replacing the catalytic conv & the sensor i believe.
