sand my rotors ?

i bought some front brake rotors from the wreckers. they have a layer of rust on them, but underneath they seem fine.

sanding the layer off seems like the best idea, the guy at the wreckers said i could, but not in a circular motion, only up and down from edge to centre.

any suggestions on how i could do this ? what sandpaper to use, if i were to use it?

might be easier to fit them and just apply the brakes a few times...this normally cleans them up...

Yep, either do what Nick said or take them to a brake shop and have them machined, $20 a pop last time i did a set.

You would be there for hours if you did it by hand, and you're not going to get a uniform finish - get them machined if you have to, but I'd personally never use rotors from a wreckers. Could easily have hairline cracks that you won't see 'til they're machined or they could be warped or any number of other things.

Brakes are the things that make you stop - don't skimp on them.. please

Yeah just fit them and put the bakes on a few times and they should be clean. If the rust is more than just surface rust then you should not use them.
