Replace thermostat

I am looking to replace the thermostat on said car, looking at the thermostats on e-bay etc it seems it comes complete with a new plastic housing for around 30 notes. now me being lets say "don't waste money type" why do I need a new housing? can I not just buy a new thermostat and pop it into the old housing.
Trying to save the planet!
