How to fit a rear wiper to a base model K10
Parts needed from donor vehicle:
Rear K10 hatch with rear wiper
Front dashboard loom
Instrument cluster
Water bottle for front and rear wiper
4 metres of suitable washer hose
This a a guide how to fit a rear wiper to a base model k10, my car is or was a 1.0LS, it had not much as standard, if your car has no trip meter on the instrument cluster and no clock this is the guide for you, if for some reason you have the round clock style instrument cluster with the trip meter and you don’t have a rear wiper you can most probably skip some parts regarding changing the front loom as the plug will most probably be there already but is not being used.
Ill start on the rear of car
Firstly you must remove you hatch, there are the wires for the heated rear window running down the petrol cap side of the car, looking at the boot take the cover off the rear lights as if you were changing a bulb, its tight but put your hand in there and pull out the part of loom that you can see entering the hatch, there are two plugs, disconnect these two plugs and start undoing the 4 bolts (12mm) joining the hatch to the body, when removed get a friend to hold the hatch while you undo the two gas shocks(4x10mm bolts). Repeat this task when removing the hatch from the donor vehicle but remember to keep the loom intact, there will be 3 plugs instead of two and on the other side will be the hose for the water, pull hose out slightly and cut hose retaining the one way valve, you will need this later.
Re-fitting the hatch with wiper to your car is the reversal of the removal, tip is put the hatch on first and then feed loom in afterwards, when you have fed the wires through to the opening by the rear light plug the two plugs together, the third one will be tied up on your existing loom, untie it and plug it in. now you will have to install the washer hose from the hatch to the engine compartment, originally it goes through the roof lining, I have taken it down and run it along the cill of the car behind plastic boot panels etc. make sure you have enough, you don’t want to run out by the time you get to the front and make sure the pipe is not chivving anywhere.
That’s the rear done, now you should have the loom connected with a length of pipe entering the engine bay stopping by the washer bottle.
Now take the washer bottle out of the car unplugging it and replace it with your donor bottle, again 2 plugs are needed as now it has two washer pump motors, these should handily on your existing loom its just a case of untying and plugging them in, connect your front and rear hoses to the right motors.
Now you need to connect the switch, this is a pain, some models may already have the plug already on the loom, I’m 99% sure if you have the clock and trip meter round style this is so but if not the easiest way is to install the loom from the donor car. This is not hard, firstly you will have to take you instrument cluster out, there is a knack of doing this as I fubared the donors one when I didn’t know how to do it, undo the two screws and put your hands behind the plastic a pull it sharply to yourself, the clips should then be released and you can carry on taking out cluster by removing the 4 screws and removing the two plugs and the speedo cable. Now parts of the loom should be in view. Go the where the bonnet catch is and you will see 4 multiplugs, 1 blue rectangle 1 white rectangle and 2 white squares, undo all plugs and it’s a case of following the loom backwards and disconnecting the loom from the associated plugs for example hazard lights, rear fog lights headunit plug and the pap speaker that by the passenger foot etc.. When removed get your donor loom and start by plugging the 4 plugs back in to the place where you first undone the loom and start putting the loom back.
The only problem which is not really a problem it’s a bonus is that you have to upgrade from the pony Ls base instrument panel to the one up with a sexy clock lol and trip meter, its more pleasing to look at as well. It is a bolt in upgrade with the loom, put back all dashboard fittings and switches including the rear wiper switch and enjoy looking out the rear window clearly when its raining and not having to manually clear the rear window in the morning.
