I'm curious to fit a manual rack or convert a spare PAS rack into a manual rack (weld the rotary valve solid) to see if it eliminates the vague 5-10deg deadzone in the power steering, improve mpg and HP.

found a cheap £30 manual rack but it must be collected in person down Wigan, which will end up costing more in fuel

alternatively I decided to buy this facelift PAS rack for £30 delivered so that I can strip it apart, weld up the rotary valve torsion shaft solid and cut the piston off the rack shaft to eliminate any possible hydraulic resistance.

if the steering effort ends up being unbareable during this experiment, I could always just reinstall the PAS rack ?
