please help with my micra !!

Hey guys im new to this forum thing,

Basically i have a micra 1999 inspiration, nothing great atm but anyway i drove it for 20 mins and afterwards the engine temperature needle was a mm away from red (first time this has happened)..... is that normal because i revved it abit higher in gears or is the problem deeper which i fear??? please help!!

possible lack of coolant ?
possible snapped belt ?

maybe a failed water pump, or a blockage in the coolant system.

Was the car actually hot though, it could just be a broken gauge. I know it's unlikely but it's a whole lot easier to fix than everything else mentioned.
