No, they own a percentage of Nissan.

Renault have a 45% share in Nissan
Nissan have a 15% share in Renault

It's more of an alliance, sharing technology with each other.

Volvo have some top notch R&D facilities, I'm surprised this wouldn't be a good investement alone.

Not sure if modern volvo's use renault engines / gearbox's, but they certainly did in the past.
