My only K11 yr 1997 key is bent and may break any day.
At present its just usable.

Whats the cheapest way of getting a replacement?

Do I have to go to a main dealer for a key or can a locksmith cut it for me - not sure if its got a immobiliser

Shudder...how much should I be thinking of spending

yours should have nats danny (red chip in the key ?) for which you will probably have to bend over at the dealers, but i think there are some locksmiths that can remove the chip and fit it to another key tho

Thks for the reply.
I do have another key - and that is just for opening the doors. It does not start the car - probably no red chip. Maybe I could move the "dumb" key to the red chip key holder? Do you think that might work?

How do I find a locksmith that knows the Nissan K11 key technology?

Thanks Frank.

First the good news.
I have now tried the "dumb" key and the red transponder key in the vicinity and that works quite well. Also it restarts the car without the red transponder in close vicinity. Thats a surprise.

Is it safe to drive like this. In case of a stall or the immobiliser coming on while on the motorway, might not be a good thing. What do people think?

Now the bad. Called two main dealers. They were busy and said they would call back. No call just yet. So they havent been able to tell me if they can do a replacement key and how much it is.

My key has a red chip in it - and will not start with "dumb" key only.

Just looking for a cost effective solution now to converting the dumb key to red chip. I am sure others have been here before me.

North West Keys in Bootle Liverpool will do a copy for £40'ish , they will also somehow come up with the "cutting" number for your key which means they can cut a new key as opposed to copying a worn key .I presume a car lock smith should have the same abilities near you ?

there is a little plastic tube like container under the red bit on the key that contains a transponder ... I suppose you could attach this to the dumb key ..

Thanks Mike.

Thanks to all for comments and pointers.

Happy ending.
I was able to get a chipped key for GBP45 from a specialist car locksmith. And I didnt have to go to Nissan with key, car and also didnt need to book an appointment with Nissan dealer!

If you are stuck and have a similar problem, ask your local garage who they recommend for a replacement Nissan Key.

They will be in the know and happy to help you out.
