"G.M. has sold most of its shares in Suzuki". Smart move seeing that fuel is getting cheaper and smaller more fuel efficient cars are the way forward.Lol. Guess G.M. will stick with its gas guzzling monsters.
Well I hope they do get together as I can see a range of small zippy cars coming out of such a marriage.
Suzuki/Nissan has a nice feel about it.

If I was GM and Ford I would be fast tracking into a range of high tech small/med. fuel efficent cars ASAP.
Still until recently guess no need due to the strength of the American oil industry influence in American politics.
GM and Ford will be minnows in the car industry within 10 years.
The Japanese are having a ball in America.

Well they sorta have... Ford Focus XR5, Holden Astra SRI turbo.
But Australians would have to appreciate home made and designed vehicles i'm sure. But productively, its just not viable. it might just be inevitable that we see the big american motor companies fade away.

hehe the american government has been doing a few things to annoy the oil companies recently... One good example is here in australia you are taxed if you make biodiesel in your backyard shed. In the states you can make biodiesel yourself - no questions asked. The major oil companies were very upset with this as it means they now have a SERIOUS environmentally friendly competition which can do what they do, but cheaper!!!

No. You are meant to declare every litre of biodiesel you make in your backyard!

Biodiesel.org.au WROTE:

"Excise - No Exemption for Personal Use Producers

Despite strong recommendations that special consideration be provided to personal use producers of biodiesel, the legislation that has passed through the House of Representatives and awaiting consideration by the Senate, applies the $0.38143 per litre excise to ALL biodiesel production..."

Tax may not have been the correct word, I'm not crash hot with all the technical governmenty sayings. But the fact still stands that you are meant to declare all biodiesel you make (partially so they can get money from you, and partially so they can keep track of the use of the materials used in the process of making the biodiesel for environmental issues. The government has been making a big thing lately about keeping track of oils in particular.)

In my opinion, having spent the last 2 weeks test driving new cars
from various manufacturers, they are all almost the same. Very few new innovative ideas, if you sit in a Peugot, Renault, Swift, Hyundai, Astra, they all feel the same, look the same, and to be quite honest, parting with $25,000 or so for a car that has little edge on what I already have, just doesn't excite me. The more manufacturers that merge, the worse it will become. For your information, Suzuki decided NOT to put an ashtray in their cars, I find it really handy for storing house keys, loose change etc....BUT, for a fee of $36 you can have one installed.
When I think about it, they don't even offer mud flaps, window tint, mats.....nothing. I got all that thrown in when I bought my car. The thought of going back to having to get all that done aftermarket is something I don't want to do..main reason being, the quality of workmanship out there is appalling. My son just spent $4500 on a total rebuild of his motor, the bastard mechanic forgot to put the radiator hose back on properly, and yeh, it spewed coolant everywhere and boiled his new engine, not to mention that they broke his tail light. Its disgusting whats going on out there and scary too.
I have contacted 3 mechanics so far, trying to get someone who can replace my clutch...no one is interested, not even Cleveland Nissan where I bought the car. The world is falling apart.

Most sellers of new cars just want you to go back for regular services and charge you like a raging bull.Lucky if they have fully qualified mechanics anymore as against "factory trained" service personal.I would not trust the local Nissan dealer here with a basic service. The person doing it probably never seen a Micra before.
That really stinks micagirl.I assume the mechanic who did the work now up for another rebuild totally free of charge.

Fortunately my son had the sense not to pay for the work straight away, the mechanic was too slack to hand him a bill on pick up...its taken 5 months for this rebuild to occur, 5 months my boys car sat out in the weather with no protection...its just slack.

Thanks Yom, will go check it now :)

Interesting links Tom.

I read and understood if you register and pay the excise of $0.38143 per liter, you can apply to the Cleaner Grants Fuel Scheme which provides for an offsetting grant of $0.38143 excise duty per liter. Providing you meet a few requirements.

So, it looks like a lot of paperwork, paying the excise tax and then getting your payments refunded???

Before the excise, does anyone know what it costs to manufacture a liter of bio-diesel?

I see a place in Byron Bay was selling their bio-diesel for $1.27/L http://www.northcoastbiodiesel.com/rates.html

So, if you remove the excise and the GST that would be approx. $0.7732/L

I wonder what the profit margin on that is?

Its not much. Apparently your average backyard setup doesn't meet the standards the CGFS requires. The products have to be sampled at various stages of the product cycle, and these testings can end up costing you in the thousands. It suddenly becomes cheaper to just pay the excise...

Thats my understanding anyway. It is the reason most people aren't telling anyone about what they're making in the shed out back. :p There's alot of authoritity which is a little pissed off at this but quite honestly the excise is what is holding australia back in regards to using more environmentally friendly fuels.

Our government seems more interested in systems which have been proven to NOT be a long term solution (ie: toyota prius). They should be running arund in VW turbo diesels running on Biodiesel... These are the sorts of vehicles which should be given the huge tax breaks the Prius has been given.

I'd rather see Nissan with Suzuki than the existing Mitsubishi cooperative on micro cars.
We would still have to pay road tax if running biodiesel, same deal if it was running on electricty, water etc.

Yeah surely with the new swift, the k11, the K12 and whole swag of other cool small cars between Nissan and Suzuki, they could come up with something awesome for the Australian market.

I want lightweight. I don't want one of these new small cars that say they have all this great high power, but then they weigh in at 1200Kg.

They need to build something sub 1000kg with like 150kw kind of thing and decent traction and a funky interior and striking exterior looks.

Unfortunately "need" and "want" are two very different things.. :(

Just did some quick conversions. Micra C+C retail in the UK for in excess of $26,000. Micra 160S (the sporty one with the 1.6L engine) retails for not much less. I dunno about anyone else here, but if I was in the market I wouldn't pay over $25,000 for a Micra sized vehicle.

From nissan japan website, the HR15DE powered march in a decent kit looking body are around $18,000. For the 1.5 SR-A it is just over $19,000. 1.2SR (CR12DE) is just over $20,000 and there appears to be a 12SR special model (possibly lightweight?) which slips (price wise) between the 1.5SR-A and the 1.2SR.

They all seem to weigh around hte 1200kg to 1300kg mark. The 15SR-A has a 80kw, 148nm motor. Being a HR though, a Tiida 1.8L would probably slip in without fuss. The 12SR has 81kw @ 6900rpm vs the 15sr-a @ 6000rpm, and 138nm torque.

Beats me. They all sound slower than a wet rag. I thought the jdm SR's were supercharged too!! :S Also seems the 15SR-A is automatic only. Power through a CVT. Damn. Nugget alert!

Thats why when your concidering to spend 20-25k on a new car that you don't even like you shouldn't, If you love your micra or pulsar or civic or what ever you drive why not spend a similar amount on that car.

The only thing that newer cars offer other than being new is more storage compartments, more sound deadening, and more money. You could for example keep your Micra rebuild the entire car add things like elctric windows, mirrors, power-steer, retrim interior, abit of engine work and rebuild, even sound deadening, paint and a tidy turbo or supercharged conversion. Other than all the organising for different trades to do there bit you could have it all done for under 20k easy..

IMAGINE:- New Nissan Micra 1.3 Super-charged 95-105kw Air, Steer, Power windows, Power mirrors and all the paint and interior/exterior to your liking..

I'd be more worried about crumple zones of newer cars compared to whether they have airbags or not...

But I still wouldn't mind a new 160S if I was in the market for a new car... But I think I'll hang out for a few years and see what crops up

After looking around I realised that the whole micra is a crumple zone. lol

Thats why I wanted one with the airbag. Might give me a little bit of a buffer zone.

I would feel safer with a 5 point racing harness but they're a wee bit impractical for road use, not to mention apparently illegal in QLD! :p

Anther K11 owner here in NZ has fitted an SR20 into a K12. There is plenty of room.
The HR15DE & HR16DE are different motors to the MR18DE & MR20DE.
Yes the MR18DE from the Tiida will fit under the bonnet but you'd still have the same hassles (mounts, gearchange, CV's etc.) as for fitting the SR20.

Motoring section of the paper today was hinting Nissan Australia might consider bringing in the Micra again with the increased demand in smaller cars. That would certainly stir things up in this segment of the market - and create a whole new generation of Micra club members!

On another note, a Micra scored a place on the telly last night on "Bend it Like Beckham". A bit of a tight fit for a shag-mobile!

haha yeh... A bit tight.

After the prices I saw on Nissan Japan's and Nissan UK's websites the other day though, I really doubt they'll bring the Micra back right now. With the pricing around the same area as the Tiida it'll be another sales disaster like the K11.

Yaris starts at $13,000 or something... Thats where nissan has to aim their pricing for the return of Micra and i don't think the k12 can give them that sort of flexibility.
