Armed with nothing more than a MIG welder, ebay crossmember repair section, cup of tea and some ciggies I entered battle...
The nice new one!
The dodgy old one!
After the swearing, hammering, drilling and grinding!
If you are replacing a crossmember, to save hassle and extra work I use a spot weld drill and drill out the welds rather than grind away like a madman. I also prefer to leave the headlinghts as they are. If you jiggle about a bit you can take the 2 nuts off the back of the bumper by reaching round the washer bottle.
The reason I leave the headlamps in is because most of the time (especially on an older K11 the captive bolts holding the headlamp in will shear. Also you can use the headlamps to help align everything before you weld the new one in.
Oh dear!
Beefed the new one up a bit with a bit of seam welding.
Generous coat of rattle can black!
